 I think Im having detonation in my 1978 2.3 4spd. I made a thread on the engine noises a while back. All I did so far was hok up all the air duct things better so its getting fresh air not under hood air. I still get the rattle after it gets hot. The hollow rattle like a marble in a can noise. It starts out with a tick-tick real quick one two times, then next it turns to rattle noise. This occurs after a few miles when its hot outside. Its not a regular ping because its not even spaced like ping noise.

 Next I guess I should check the cooling system well, and Im thinking about going to  cooler plugs.

 Does anyone have experience with checking cleaning the gr valve? Will you please post on this thread exactly what you did how you did it etc. Concerns are getting it apart and back together of course, and how to clean it if its blocked and what has to be done to do it safely (not messing it up or getting carbon bits inside the engine etc)

 Already switched from 89 to 91 gas it helps some but its not the cure.

Someone must have been through this.

Have you run any fuel treatments lately? If it starts to go away when you go with a higher octane gas there could be a lot of buildup on the pistons & combustion chamber. Couldn't hurt to go ahead & buy a can of seafoam & pour the whole can in a full tank. I used it on my 08 Pontiac & it did really good at cleaning the fuel system.
 
As for the egr valve there is the metal line you will have to unscrew & two bolts. Make sure you use a new gasket when you reinstall it.  The top piece where there is the vacuum line there is a rubber diaphragm underneath the metal piece. turn over the valve & check out the rubber diaphragm. It won't be the easiest thing to get to but see if it is cracking or crunchy. If it is the valve is junk & needs replaced.
 
For the EGR port on the carb: Spray some carb cleaner & carefully use a wire brush or carefully scrape away the carbon & grime. Do the same thing on the port on the EGR valve.
 
That's pretty much all there is to cleaning the EGR.

 Thanks Mat thats some useful information to get me going. I need to use my car its my daily driver since mt transmission went out in my Lincoln a couple years ago.

 Now, I think I should get a new gasket and spare valve before I start this procedure. And should I put a small rag or something in the port to try to keep carbon from going back in while Im trying to clean it out?

 Are these gaskewts available anywhere like OReilly or Rockauto?

They are available at your local parts store last time I checked. I was able to get one for my 77 a couple years ago with no problem. No need to worry about stuffing a rag in the port. Any carbon that comes off will  be able to burn off with no problem when the car runs.

 Thanks Matt its weird that it just started it doing a few months ago all of a sudden. Im thinking of checking the cooling system out real well to.

 Does anyone know of a good water temp guage thats easy to install?
