Dash Pad Removal and Tach Install
« on: August 11, 2013, 09:56:52 AM »
So, I'll group these two things together. How do you go about removing the dashpad? Does it mean taking the whole dash apart to do so?

Also, I've got a tach that I'd like to put in my car but I don't know where to wire it up at. I read something suggesting you wire it at the distributor? But I can't find where you would do that.

Tach wire goes to the distributor side of the coil, make sure the tach is set to the number of cylinders. Can't help with the dash though.

Ok cool. Is it one side to the distributor coil
 and one side to  ground?

You should have 3 wires(not counting the light)pos/neg and the tach wire(probably green?)that is the only wire to the coil. Connect the pos to a switched terminal the other to a good ground.

There is a total of 6 each 5/16" nut's to remove and are difficult to get to so unless you are going to recover or replace I would go with dash cap.  Fred   :)

Like 74 PintoWagon wrote the tack wire (usually green) goes to the coil. NOTE: it gets attached to the NEG (-) post the same one the dist. wire is attached to.

What Fred Said... the 1979 I just did also had several smaller screws to remove besides the ones he mentioned + it's a yes. To remove the dash you have to have everything out vent-to-vent to reach all the screws.

Ouch. I'm lazy. It's no show car so a dash cap is just fine hahah

Also if you do install cap I would not use glue that comes with it I would use silicone so it will be easy to remove after car gets wrecked and you want to install in next car as I did.   Fred   ;D
