Title: D port intake for stock Weber carb
Post by: Pinto5.0 on April 06, 2014, 08:25:39 PM
I want to stick my fresh 86 turbo engine in my wagon & run a stock carb for now. Is there a D port intake that takes a 5200 & if so what's it off of?

One year some where around 82 on 2300 Mustangs. Looked just like ever other 2300 Pinto intake except it was D port. VERY hard to find and not cheap when you find one. E-bay had one about 1 month ago. 4m.net some times. I know of people that run oval port intakes on D port heads.

I have several oval port but was worried about fuel puddles at the head on cold starts. I was thinking of using JB Weld to build the bottoms of the intake ports up to the level of the head. This engine may end up running this way for a couple years until I'm ready to swap the turbo & wiring into the car.

I had the same problem and ported out the D-shape to an oval shape on the head. With stone wheels, grinder and a air compressor it only took about an hour to do all four.

I got lucky & a D port intake just popped up on ebay so I nabbed it.

'82 and later models, Fairmonts had them.......... .............. ..JB weld will eventually come loose from fuel exposure and temperature, you must anchor it with rough surface and holes drilled to give the epoxy something to grab onto. Not the hot setup. A D port manifold on oval port head will run all day long and no power loss from the misfit there. At one time you could find them everywhere at $20 apiece.

This has been used for ages for intakes and heads for porting, easy to work with too.

An epoxy called 3-loy or something like that is what Mazda used to modify all kinds of rotary parts. Stuff never came loose and as lots of ad say, you could really drill and tap it. Good stuff.

I paid $150 for this intake. It wasn't cheap but when I'm done with it in a few years I'll sell it & recoup my money. All 3 running engines (2 are 8to1 turbo & 1 is a 9to1 EFI) I have sitting are D-port engines & I didn't want to grind on the heads. My wagon is my driver so I need to do this swap fast. I'm going to clean & assemble everything on the garage floor with new gaskets so all I need to do is yank my 2.3 & bolt this one in & fire it up. The last time I did this it took me 6 hours start to finish but since I'm swapping a T5 for the automatic I figure I'll be dicking with that stuff for another 8 to 10 hours at least.

Worst case if I can't get it going over a weekend means I'll be stuck driving my 9 mpg dually until it's finished.

I have used more epoxy than most but in no way would I ever characterize one as drillable and tappable. It just doesn't happen; the material in no way is strong enough to hold torque. You can tap it but just try getting something to hold there if no solid backing by metal. Not happening in this world or the next.

Used to have to constantly patch and repatch it when pieces fell out of the race AMC heads we used to do. The entire intake pushrod wall was brazed and epoxied to make huge ports for 2.100 intakes.
