Complete My Frankin-Drive-Train, Parts Help Needed
« on: May 01, 2013, 08:37:19 PM »
Okay, so I am finally putting the pieces together for my 80 Pinto to do a motor and trans swap.

Currently, the car has the stock 2.3 liter 4-banger, and the stock 4-speed, and at the back is an 8" Ford rear-end.

The motor and trans are going to be pulled, and in will be going a low-milage '88 mustang T5 (from a 4 cylinder car), and a re-worked 2.5 Liter from a Ford Ranger.

I know I need a bell-housing to mate the two, I would assume the one from a 4-cylinder stick mustang (Still need to get one). I would also need the fork assembly for the bell-housing as well, as I do not have that portion of the drive-train yet.

As for the clutch, I was hoping to use the flywheel and pressure plate from the 2.3 currently in the car (centerforce pressure plate & factory flywheel). If I recall correctly, I would need a new, 8 1/2 inch, 10-spline clutch disc, and proper throw-out bearing.

I also recall something about the driveshaft. Can I use the factory Pinto drive-shaft? Or will I have to hunt down a mustang one?

If my thoughts are correct, I will need:
Clutch Disc & Throw-out bearing
4-cylinder / T5 Bell-housing & clutch fork assembly
Driveshaft (possibly)

Also, if I recall correctly, I need to do something with the clutch cable, moving it or bending it so that it misses the cross-member in front of the transmission. What needs to be done to it?

Thanks!

Your aftermarket set may work with the current flywheel however you will need to change the disc. What size is your current flywheel/ pressure plate ?  If they match your good.  Otherwise get a set that matches. Some flywheels are drilled for both size clutches. See Rockauto.com The throw out bearing must be for the T-5 and the fork as well. They are do not look like the same size to me. The T-5 looks like it has a bigger input shaft etc. You might have to change out the pilot bearing in the fly wheel. You can use the rear part of the driveshaft however the slip yoke needs to change. The U-joint should be a 1310 series and the slip yoke you get must be the same. You can get a hybrid U-joint but why bother. Speedway sells the slip yokes etc. Look for a T-5/ C-4. The clutch cable just needs a small bracket to move it off the trans cross member...The wiring for the reverse and neutral switch might be different. You might need the engine block plate the goes in between the engine /a bell housing and a EFI starter. The might not be the same( Rockauto lists the starter as for the Pinto is not the same for the Ranger etc.). I'm currently getting the parts myself for my 2.3 Turbo , T-5 and 8" rear end swap. So I'm taking a real hard look right now. I'm going with a new flywheel, clutch kit etc. And I'm not going to try to mix and match...The total cost for me so far is about $130.00 plus shipping. If the weather holds up I getting a T-Bird drive shaft and adding it to the one I have.

Currently, the flywheel is stock, and the clutch set-up is Centerforce DF203024, Dual Friction Pressure plate & clutch, 8 1/2" diameter disc, 26 spline, 1" input shaft.

I have read that I can use the same flywheel & pressure plate, but will need to get a new disc as the spline count is 10. According to Centerforces' website, I would need part number 281220, 8 1/2" disc, 10 spline, 1 1/16" input shaft.

Based on that, I might need a new pilot bearing, as it sounds like the T5 input shaft is 1/16" bigger diameter.

As to the throw-out bearing, Centerforce is calling out N1705 for the pinto 2.3, and N1714 for the mustang 2.3, so I would need that as well.

I don't have the stock flywheel from the 2.5 Ranger motor (though I could probably find one). The 2.5 was in a mini-stock car, and raced once or twice before it got retired, so the motor is literally like new (was rebuilt with new parts before put in the race car). The flywheel that's on it, if I remember correctly, is a light-weight one for racing.

Yeah, I would change the flywheel to a T-5 car either a 1983 to 1988 Turbo T-bird or a Mustang. The 2.5 had a Mazda 5 speed not the T-5 . Check rockauto.com A light weight fly wheel might not be the best for street work. Rockauto.com has a great cross reference feature...
