Title: Clutch Pedal Assembly
Post by: azz101462 on June 27, 2016, 05:24:06 PM
I have a 1974 Pinto Wagon, T5 Manual Transmission, I am not sure what is in the car is stock was wondering if anyone have a photo or diagram of a clutch pedal assembly?
also does anyone know if the clutch had a Quadrant on the original setup? what's in my car does not and the throw is a bit short.

My white car had an extension welded on top & a new hole drilled for more pull length.

If this works this is from the 1974 Ford Factory Service Manual.
Sorry about the size and quality, I had to print and then scan the image, my manual was given to me and it is locked as far as copying and editing.
The top figure is for the Pinto. If you click on it the picture is a bit clearer.

I've been told there are as many as four pedal arrangements used on Pinto's. The 71-73 early cars are one. Brake Booster cars are another. What the other two are I'm not sure but one must obviously be an unboosted '74 and up to some year.

Can you define what you mean by quadrant?  The two types of arrangements used are the direct pull which I believe are associated with the Merkur bellhousing and the bell crank that came on the earlier Turbo Coupes.  I have a 86 bell crank bell housing on my '88 T-5 trans in my '73 wagon.  I'll include a few pictures if that helps anything. The adapter for the cable to clear the crossmember is self fabricated.  I was hoping that the pictures showed the other end of the bell crank with the short intermediary cable and the clutch fork but it is not to be.

So, it may be you have a mix match of parts???  Could something be loose or flexing???  Hopefully you will get enough information to sort it out.

What he is asking about is the 1979 and up Ford Mustang or Thunderbird 2.3 T-5 which had a plastic quadrant/ cam on/in in the pedal assembly. It was mounted inside the top of the pedal assembly. The 1974 and up Ford Pinto uses a direct connection from the clutch cable mounting point on the pedal to the bell crank. The pedal bushings you can still order and are a Dorman brand part. Should be for Pintos or Mustang II or try to look up the bushings for the brake pedal instead. Yes they are the same diameter it's just that most likely the brake pedal bushing gets the most wear.

Hummm..., would that be the 86 and older Thunderbird 2.3 T-5?  I had an '88 that was hydraulic which is probably why I was unfamiliar with it.

Only ones I found & says do not fit.

If you find the right part numbers for both brake & clutch, please post a link.

Thanks

If it will fit the 1980 Ford Pinto it should fit yours. Remember the Ford Pinto did not really change year to year on the inside so the Dorman part number 74016 should work. Hell it's just a plastic spit bushing set that goes around the pedal thru-bolt what do you have to lose...Not much and it should fit. You are getting a set not just one piece. Yes I know what the catalog says however some of the items listed as fitting the 1972 Pinto do not fit. See how much the price is and buy it. Remember when you take the pedal apart take the shaft out and measure the O.D. and the size of the hole in the pedal and then see what you need .It should not be too much of a difference. The bushing just keeps the pedal form seizing on the shaft of the thru bolt not supporting the shaft of the thru bolt.

71 to 74 clutch pedal assembly's are the same , 75 up are different because they made the clutch cable position higher and out of the way to later use the power brake booster , the clutch pedal would bolt in all by itself , not like the early common shaft on clutch arm that would hold the brake pedal also,
