Chassis Table
« on: December 30, 2015, 09:27:38 PM »
I'm about ready to pull my early Pinto off the rotisserie and set it up on a chassis table for the next phase.  Mainly for engine and suspension fitting.  Basically keeping the stock unibody construction, but want to build it square.

Wondering if others have done this and how/where they mounted the table to the body?  Need to know this before I build the table.

I'm considering all of the following mount points to work with, yet several need to be removable to mock up systems for fitting.

The front bumper mount holes, engine crossmember center hole, front subframe through holes, both front and rear spring perches, and possibly the rear bumper mount.  My big concern is on the rear.  While on the table I'll want to mock up the rear suspension and work through the geometry and fitment of tires and such.  But the rear bumper mount is a weak area to hang that much weight off of.

So what have others done?

Thanks and look forward to your input.

Pat

Sounds like over kill if you are not cutting for sub frames / back half.

I'd just set it up with 6 screw jack stands.

There will be some cutting and welding.  Need to cut trunk floor out and replace it.  Some work on the firewall and trans tunnel.  Want to make sure the car is square from the beginning and be able to square everything from that point forward.  I haven't ruled out subframe connectors, probably going at least 6 point cage, and may go further.

I think I can make a rear mount using the top of the rear shock mounts.  I'll have to triangulate that one so the rear end can be installed for mockup.

I acquired quite a stash of 3" x 3" tubing pretty cheap, and a square table would be a nice tool to have in the shop.
