1978 power steering delete
« on: June 21, 2012, 07:10:26 AM »
Can anyone give me info on deleting the power steering on my 1978 pinto?  It has a 302 V8 and I would like to remove the power steering.    Thanks, Nicholas

What you need to do is get a few parts: manual steering rack & pinion, manual steering alternator bracket, and different steering coupler for the manual steering. Once you have all the parts go to town & remove all the old stuff & put on the new stuff. The alternator bracket is completely different for the manual steering car which is why you need to switch it & unless I was mistaken the same thing for the steering coupler at the bottom where the rag joint is. I believe I was once informed they are different.

A manual rack has a smaller diameter splined shaft than a power rack but if you check Ebay there is a spline adapter for about 20 bucks that slips on the manual rack so you can bolt your coupler right on it. I cant find one at the moment but they exist because I bought one less than a year ago.

You will need manual rack tie rod ends since they differ from power & watch the spacing between the mounts on the rack. Some aftermarket racks are wider between mounting holes. It's an easy swap just watch the little details.
