I've seen a lot of great posts on different aspects of timing. Can we put it all in one place so it's easier to find?
I've been doing a lot of reading and still have some questions.
Questions involving the intricacies of degreeing a cam, what the options are as far as methods and tools.
Questions about what to do about ignition timing for those running without a timing belt cover.
I'm sure there are many other people who have questions as well that would benefit from putting it all in one place.

I think it would be a good idea to have a "Tech" section with different areas like Engine, Transmission & Driveline, Suspension, Body, and Electrical, that would keep information in all in one place and make it a lot easier to search out info.. J M H O of course..

I totally agree.
There are enough subjects that keep coming up.
If we had a tech section we could have an intake/carb specific thread, a wheel/tire thread with pics and specs.
what else do we need???

When I ran with no timing belt cover I actually kept the lower part of the back to provide a bit of shielding from rocks going into the crank pulley area to bust the belt. I cut a one inch or less wide strip of the front cover out right at the mark to make a thin strip including the timing tab that ran across the face and still bolted down on both ends with two original hole locations.
Be aware that running belt in the open will greatly increase pulley wear, the extra dirt then gradually sands the pulley grooves out to round them off. It looks cool though........ .......and belt change in 5 minutes or less. Front cam, third shaft, and crank seals will tend to leak faster too.

thanks AMC. I hadn't thought of the advanced wear.
I was doing it for a couple reasons, access to the adjustable cam sprocket (haven't got it yet), constant belt inspection, instant evidence of leaking cam seal, things like that.
I am still going to run the rear cover, I like your idea for cutting the strip out of the front cover

I'm keeping my timing covers for protection but I may make the top of the front removable to adjust the upper gear.

I've seen it done. As long as you have access to a welder & some basic fab skills it's easy & costs nothing but time.

A few small tabs welded around the perimeter & some #6 or 8 machine screws is all it needs. Of course I'll get anal about it & find a way to hide the screws or something equally meaningless that will take it from a 30 minute job to a week long ordeal. I'm amazingly good at that!
