Can Gauge Clusters Interchange?
« on: July 01, 2013, 10:07:49 PM »
Long story short, I bought a fairly complete (but rusted to all hell) '77 Pinto Stallion Wagon (4-speed stick) to 'donate' parts to my '74 Runabout (automatic).

My main concern (since I have most everything else lined out) is that the RPM gauge (uses a black plug w/4 prongs) may not be able to mount in my runabout (not worried about the dash, just plug-ins). I've never taken my dash apart in the Runabout and have no honest idea.

Also: In the wagon, there's 3 gauges in a cluster; Oil, Amperage, and Engine Temp. Since all three of these are located within my Speedo on the runabout...can I just re-route the wires to the middle-of-the-dash cluster?

Thanks dudes!
Bought my Pinto in '12, last tagged in '97. Had it on the road (thanks to a $20) spring '14. Tima to tear it apart, fix it correctly this time....and play with the drive train. Got a totally free & complete drive train-engine, 5 speed, drive shaft, and computer!

not too sure but if you dont end up using the 3 gauges from the wagon i would be intrested in them for my 78 wagon, some one before i bought it took them out and installed custom cheap china ones!!

I thought there was a write up somewhere that showed what needed to be done to convert to the tach cluster without changing the wiring harness.  I would do a search.  I want to say 77turbopinto did it.  If you want to do it right, I would change the harness as you will need to run the wires for the tach feed and change the sensors from the idiot light ones to a gauge.

The engine / underdash wiring harness.  I sold the harness out of an 80 bobcat I had along with the gauges to a local guy.  Two days later, he had the car running and driving without too much trouble.

However it is possible to get them working with the non-tach wiring harness.  I have never done it though.

Damn.. any chance you'd have a diagram of which ones went where? I just sold the old wagon (with most wires still attached))

Bill (77turbopinto) documented it somewhere.  I looked a little tonight but did not find it.  It might be buried in his tan Pinto thread.
