Bumpers - 2 part ?
« on: December 13, 2011, 10:28:55 AM »
 1) Has anyone had a bumper recently re-chromed & what was the cost? I'm suffering from 'sticker shock' over the estimate I just got !
 2) Will the alum. ones for a '77 fit on a '76 ?
I will appreciate any info.  Thanks

Yes, the 77-78 aluminum bumpers will fit the 76.  You need the front energy absorbers from the 77-78 to bolt the aluminum bumper to the 76.

I just got a set from Fred Morgan.  Very happy.

I was quoted $650 each. It seems logical but does the 76 bumper fit the 77. There is a 76 on ebay. I do not know if I should buy it.

Yup, they'll fit. May have to use the 76 shock absorbers so be sure and get them. Only problem is you'd have a "dull" aluminum bumper on one end and chrome on the other. If that doesn't bother you, go for it.
I've owned over 50 Pintos (Down to 4 right now including a 78 Cruisin Wagon. Sorry guys/gals, no small bumper cars although I do have a good 71-73 front bumper.)
I used to buy wrecked Pintos "back in the day" (70's) and "clip" them. Get one hit in front and one hit in back and then weld them together at the windshield posts, rocker panels, and floor seam. My cars were stronger than factory as most times I would weld the seam solid instead of just at the spot welds. I took pictures of my cars before, during, and after then showed them to customers. I had five (5) Pintos when Ralp Nader got involved and had no trouble selling any of them once I showed them the location of the gas tank relative to a Chevette, or even the early Mustangs.
Out of more than 50 cars, wrecked every way imaginable, none burned nor have I ever seen a burned one except on TV! True fact!! Bought one hit so hard in the back that I didn't even recognize it at first glance. Had to walk around to the front to tell. The car was completely flat from the lower valance to about mid-roof as though it had hit a brick wall at 80MPH......... ..backward. Must have been rear-ended by a cab-over semi is all I can assume? Didn't burn!!
Out of 50+ cars, I've only had three (3) with bad engines. A 76 2300 with 68K miles that had been hot-rodded from birth, a 72 with high miles and a 2000, and a 78 with 2300.(The Cruizin Wagon). Not sure on it as Larry, Darrell, and his other brother Darrell, had "overhauled" the engine to put into a Bobcat.......t he ditch-digging kind of Bobcat cause they hear a Pinto engine would fit a Bocat. Think the "overhaul" consisted mainly of cleaning it up, changing the oil, and painting various parts such as the motor mounts, John Deere Green. Imagine their surprise when the engine didn't work in their ditch digger? :P  I traded two (2) Chrysler automatic transmissions (Condition unknown but "working when pulled?) for the 78 Cruisin Wagon. I have the engine stuck back into the nest but that's as far as I've gotten on it.
I've probably worn out my welcome so will sign off. Hope you get your bumper issues corrected.
