Bump steer kits I can get fast?
« on: September 24, 2013, 04:47:13 PM »
Ok im looking to correct the bump steer in my car. The rack has been lowered so im looking for an easy to source kit here in Canada to get things where they need to be. Id like to race the car friday lol. Will a mustang kit work?

My car is a twin turbo 78 Pinto. I think thats why it got loose on the top end on the previous owner. Any help is appreciated!

I am having parts I got off of E-Bay modified as I write this for my race Pinto. The first picture is the uprights that fit 1973 up (I changed my Disc spindles from 71 to 73) so they will fit your car. The second picture is of the Heim joints that replace the tie rod ends. The uprights are 5/8s. I also bought 5/8 hole size Heim joints with 3/4 solid ends (male) that I am having drilled and tapped for my 71 rack ends. I was not able to find female Heim ends to fit my rack with the larger 5/8s hole to match the uprights.Your tie rod ends are larger so you may get lucky and find the right female combo Heims. Just a note, I am also having him turn down the Heims on a lathe and drilling out the center cores of the uprights to save weight while he is at it. For me ounces add up to pounds so I add lightness to free up usable horsepower with my tiny engine.

I bought a bunch of parts. Couldn't find up here. Had to order from the States.

Still have the parts, but now way I can get them to you that quick.

Tell us more about the car ?
Where in Canada ?

Ok so i'll have to piece something together then. I was hoping there was a kit I could buy that would work with a little modification. I was hoping a mustang kit would be close. Im not 100% that its going to be an issue with bump steer but wanted to make sure I have a plan if it is. The car had some issues with the squareness of the 4 link so im hoping that fixes things but until I race it I wont know.

My car is 78pintos old car Jeff Ficthers. I posted pics. Im from St. Thomas Ontario. I've been working on all the stuff that wasnt finished before he passed and doing a few improvements. Im hoping to get the car to run deep into the 10's next year.

Thanks for the help so far! If anyone else has any tips please let me know.

Summit Racing & Jegs both have the complete kits for the Mustang II '74 - '78.
 BAE-3261004 @ Summit and 136-3261004 @ Jeg's.
They aren't cheap. I made my own, but after buying the parts & having a machine shop make the adj. sleeves, I wish I had just bought the kit.

What you're experiencing is this: 'Pulls front wheels on launch!!!' That's not bump steer. That's just a badass car.

Bump steer. That feeling when the front end settles back down. There's no kit for 'Hang on for the ride!!!' :) lol

This just makes me giggle.

The rack was moved down between 1 and 2' with no correction on the tie rod ends.  If you watch the twin turbo pinto action videos on youtube you'll see how the car handles on the top end. Im hoping that the issues with the 4 link took care of thing but I wont be sure until I run it. From all accounts of people who knew him and the car it got really scary loose on the top end. I know its a bad butt car but it shouldnt do that. My mustang ran consistiant 11.30's n/a and 10.80s on nitrous and it stayed straight the whole time. I know two different cars but there are lots of pintos way faster than mine that are stable all the way thru.

I'll have to check it. Thanks for the pic. I did a couple hard pulls on the street and it seems stable so I hope things are ok. The 4 link was out of square 3/8" and the car dog tracked when I got it so Im hoping that fixes the issues on the top end. Lol when I nailed it the car pulled left so hard it was like someone yanked the wheel! If not ill be looking into the bump steer.

I heard the guy who installed the 4 link had to do some more work to it but after Jeff passed away the guy closed up shop or something to that effect. Who knows what he was suppose to do. Maybe square it lol? Its tough buying a car from someone that isnt around anymore. All my knowledge of what has been done to the car has come from internet forums and people who think they know what has been done. If you guys have any insight on the car let me know. I think I have it close to where he wanted it to be.

Just an update I made one pass and the car went straight as an arrow so it was the rear the whole time. I took it real easy until about 1/8 track than gave it and ran 11.17 @124 lol. This thing is a beast, easy deep 10 second car. Bad thing is I blew the pump seal out of the transmission.
