Title: broken seat mounting
Post by: ToniJ1960 on March 17, 2013, 12:46:31 PM
Well finally the brakes are working ok hopefully.

Now I found on the passenger seat the floor metal is split where the rear outer seat bolt goes through it. The little L bracket that was welded to the bottom is broken too. Whats the best way to fix this, a piece of strong steal under the seat, under the car etc?

If you don't want to cut out the bad metal & weld in a patch then what you can do is cut a piece of sheet metal bigger than the area, drill a hole for the seat rail stud to go through, use some JB Weld on it to help secure it, as well as rivet or screw down the patch. What you might want to consider is to sandwich the split metal with another piece of metal under the car before bolting up the seat.

Thats what I was thinking too. I have a piece of 18 ga steal I could cut into two long 3 inch wide strips. I set it in and it doesnt look like it would need to be bent unless it goes further up where the floor curves up toward the front of the seat. I was thinking about the jb weld and screws too, doubling the strips over to make it even more rigid. I had treated the floor metal with vactan and now its a black color so I dont know how the jb weld would hold to that, but it should keep the strips together.

When I lft up on  the seat is when I see the movement and the crack in the floor more. So I was thinking it should be reinforced underneath too somehow. I dont know how I could get the old L bracket of without tearing anything up and its not likely to be able to be welded back together. But who knows I never welded. Maybe theres something under there I can bolt a heavy piece to or just jb weld it underneath since it wont be trying to be puled away from underneath anyway.

Do you think I should wait and get some 16 ga or 14 ga metal?
