Body Parts
« on: January 14, 2014, 05:00:56 PM »
Hope this is not a stupid question. Will the hood off of a 78 runabout fit a 79 wagon. I sure hope so. Also, how about 78 doors on a 72??

Thanks

79-80 are the only cars to use that hood and the 78 one wont work unless yah swap the whole frontend.
As for the doors I would think the doors off a 78 would work on a 72 as long as its not a wagon. Cause if I remember right wagons used a different door.

All doors swap but are body specific wagons fit wagons and a hatch will fit a sedan! And hoods are kinda tricky but 79-80 only for sure but all hoods fit as long it the same year - mean n a wagon hood will fit same year hatch/sedan!

Well I just purchased the 78 parts on ebay and did a pretty good deal on them for sure. If swapping out the front end is and option on my 79 then I may have to go the route. I have the complete front end and interior as well. New deck lid and both doors.

Nice thing is that they are only 20 minutes from the house, and the wife is going to pick them up for me.

Thinking the front nose opening was to fit the new lower wider rectangle headlight openings. From there back the same I believe.

The 78 runabout doors should fit your 72 trunk model but you will need the hinges off the 78 as the number of bolts that bolt the hinges to the door changed from two to three on the later years.  I do not remember if it was just one or both (upper and lower).

What I have is a 79 wagon with a hacked up  hood from the turbo motor install and the driver side fender has a dent in it. I was wanting to use the 78 hood and fenders on the 79 and use the 78 doors on my 72.

My son put 76 doors on his 71. I got 76 doors from Fred to replace my rusty 71s but did not take the hinges at the time. My son let me know that I also needed the later hinges because of some mounting differences between the early doors and the later doors. Next time I was at Fred's, I picked them up also. I have not put them on the car yet but when my son says I need 'em, I must need 'em. Note: the later doors are MUCH heavier than the 71-72s.

Yes fender are different by the light due to the square headlights but if you swap the entire frontend you should be fine.

Bigtimmay, in regards to changing out the front end. Is that just the sheet metal or do you have to change the radiator support, front bumper assembly? Never changed the front end on a Pinto before.

Thanks

I used to have a 79 but its been a while since I was around one. But I would think the 78 fenders would bolt on with no problem but the grill might need holes drilled and some modification to the core support for it to bolt on correctly but then again it might all swap just fine. As I said I don't have a 79 or 80 to look at right now.

The core support is the same. You will need all the grille mounts to bolt up the early grille & the early hood latch & mount as well.
