Title: Best place for stereo speakers in Pinto
Post by: Henrius on March 31, 2013, 01:13:01 PM
The early Pintos never had any sound options except a mono radio, almost always AM, with a single speaker in the middle of the dash.

I am doing a restoration on a 1973 Runabout. For the most part, it will be stock, but I want a better sound system.

Long ago, I cut the top of the dash to install two Chrysler speaker grills utilizing 3 1/2 inch speakers. These work fine for the high frequencies, but give no bass.

My idea was to mix right and left channels for a larger speaker where the original speaker was in the dash center. My stereo dealer said the amps could not do this.

My question is, where have any of you put speakers in the Pinto Runabout to give pleasing stereo sound? There is no place under the rear hatch that is big enough. I really don't want a huge speaker box taking up room in the cargo area.

Anyone had success in equipping the Pinto stereophonical ly?

ive been wondering about this myself. I want to hide a cd player in the glove box and keep the factory am radio for a classic look. and I want to hide a pair of 6x9's in the back and a small pair of speakers under the dash. just gotta figure out how to make it work.

My two cents. Front speakers in the front lower corners of the front doors. Rear speakers by opening up the holes to access the rear side lights. I believe that you'd have halfway descent halfway resonance chambers there.

I have a wagon and stuck  cd stereo in mine.... In the rear I stuck two. 6by9 three ways in back.....it gives me my optimal sound, w/o the bulkiness of a big box in the way.....Don

in order to put them in the doors requires cutting holes, right? I don't really want to do that. I want the interior to look fairly stock. and I don't want people to know I have a cd player in it or extra speakers.

My '80 apparently came factory with door speakers. They are covered with factory grilles & I think they look good. The pic isn't the greatest.

Here is what I did-

Replaced the mono speaker with a dual coil speaker that fit exactly-

Also had Gary Tayman upgrade my stock AM radio to AM/FM/iPod- Works great!

All stock- no cutting, sounds so much better than the original AM and you can't tell it's been upgraded except for the iPhone connector I have coming out from the center console.

I would recommend this for anyone-
