Without major mods, that is. Mods similar to the T5 would be fine.
Thanks,
Russ

Hi Russ,

I think another trans is the T9 from Merkure.  Also it is supposed to put the shifter in the right place

Hi Russ,

I've been reading this post and wondering if those options would work for my situation.  I have the 2.3 Lima with the 4 speed FOG and I'm having a difficult time finding parts for this 1980 trans. (as you might have read in the other posts.)
Would you recommend that T5 or T9 option in my case? If so, what mods would be needed?

With the T5 the main issue for you would probably be that the shifter is a couple of inches forward of where it is on the FOG and you would have to cut your trans tunnel, and make sure there isn't interference with anything else on your car. There are a couple of other mods, the main one being with the crossmember, but since your's isn't a Pinto that is something else you would have to look into. There have been a few discussions about this here.

I don't really know anything about the T9 conversion. There ought to be some stuff here somewhere about it.

The Ford Ranger trans bolts up, but the shifter is way too far forward for Pintos and probably your car, along with other possible problems.  On the Pinto the shifter would be hitting the dash.

I was hoping maybe a real trans would work, like a Toploader or Muncie, but seeing as I am stuck with the 2.3L like you I don't think we have many other options.

here is a link to a discussion here that is for the T9 but also touches on what needs to be done for a T5.

Thanks for the details Russ.
I figured there would be major work related to the mod, but good to know there are options.
(New avitar?  Is that where you're at with your Pinto project.  Very ambitious!  Can't wait to see it when it's finished.)

Yep, I currently am wire wheeling the engine compartment and painting it. Might as well, I have no money for big things like transmissions at the moment and this keeps me busy.  ;D
