for my daily driver ive got a 79 wagon with about 35k (in rough shape). for a couple months every now and then at the end of my road leaving itd slip outa gear. i decided id put a new filter in thinking thatd help. it did, and it drove better too....for a few weeks. now it slips at least once or twice while im driving every time. its more of an annoyance than anything i guess. any ideas?
oh its a c3 tranny

DID YOU CK THE VACCUM LINES ON THE TRANS, IF YOU HAVE EVEN A PIN HOLE LEAK IT WILL MESS WITH IT!!
HOPE THIS HELPS
MAY BE THE INTERNALS ARE SMOKED TOO, BUT WOULD CHECK THE VACCUM LINES MUCH EASIER AND CHEAPER!!

When is it slipping on you? Is the car warmed up? Need a little more information on when it's occurring to be able to give you more information.
Also when you changed the fluid & filter what color was the fluid? Was the filter plugged?

YOU SURE ITS NOT A PINT LOW........... ......... C3/C4,S DONT LIKE LOW OIL, WILL SLIP OUT OF DRIVE WHEN BRAKING/ CORNERING/ ROAD JUNCTION,S ETC

it happens when the cars cold and warmed up. during the change withe filter and the fluid looked great. i think first ill try adding some fluid like cannonball says then ill check for vac leaks if theres no improvement. i really hope the internals arent bad, especially with only 35k lol. but if it is its a good time to switch to a c4 lol.

I would guess that the odometer has just rolled over. Mine says it has 97k on it but I'm guessing it's closer to 297k or 397k hahah

lol no mine actually is 35k. its sat in a yard for i no 10 years at least. before then, it was a summer sunday car for an old guy (the original owner) to go to church n back.

You are checking your fluid level with it warm and running in park right. cold and not running will always give you a false reading on the level. With sitting for ten years it is possible the modulator or valve body is sticking a little.
If you do decide the trans is smoked and want to try a dirty trick to fix things pour a few ounces of dot 3 brake fluid in. It does a couple neat things, Works as a detergent to knock loose anything that may be hung up, it also has the neat effect of causing the fiber bands to swell a little bit to stop slipping. In our younger years we used this trick often to "refurb" the tranny in some pin half pulled grenade we where trying to sell. In fact I know one particular 78 pinto that got treated in said manner and went on to go another 30k or so before the motor gave up ahead of the doctored trans.

what flavor of fluid did you use? hopefully type f. accidently put dexron III mercon on mine once. it still slips (a lot) until the trans warms up. the counterman at the local napa told me to use lucas trans fix in it. firmed up the trans so much that the v6 will bark the tires when Im on the throttle hard enough. hope this helps.
