Title: ARGGGHHH Please Help...Electric issues!
Post by: rick67 on November 13, 2011, 11:11:15 PM
Just put a new starter and selinoid on my 79 pinto wagon with a stock v6.  After getting things back together, we turned the key and the starter wouldn't stop running (even when the key was removed!)  To stop this we removed the neg. cable from the battery...  Thinking the auto parts place may have given us the wrong selinoid, we put the old (still working) selinoid back on... Here's the issue... After re-hooking up the battery I have no electric that works, everything from interior lights to headlights etc... We replaced the battery, and still no electric.  We checked the fuses under the dash, and all are okay.  I'm at a loss!  Can anyone steer me  in the right direction?

Thanks!
Rick

first  the replacement solenoid was bad  i had the same thing  about 2 yrs ago  if you did not catch it quick  enough a couple things can happen  the voltage regulator will burn out  or the starter will go bad ,  with mine the regulator went bad as well  and would drain the batter over night,  there is also a fusible  link in the system i think it comes from the solenoid ( i just cant remember  right now)
tomarrow i will try and look at one of my books and  find out where it is at .  hopefully  some one else may have some ideas as well.

Kind of along the fusible link thing...did you by chance put it on the starter side of the solenoid or forget to put it on? Just something to check.A stuck solenoid or the wrong one shouldn't burn anything out within reason. I had the same thing happen to my wagon about 2 weeks ago while putting it together but the old solenoid was just bad. A new solenoid fixed the problem and no electrical issues afterwards.

After putting the old solenoid back on (It still worked when pulled and is the original) I still have no electric... It's like the battery isn't even hooked up.  Where is the "fusible link"?  My original solenoid only has one post out of the front with an "s" stamped on it, the new one had two posts one said S the other said I...  The 2 wires that attach to it in the front are the type that slide on the front bolt (fused or heat shrunk together) but don't get tightened, they kinda snap into place. I think we blew something, I just don't know where, or how to fix.  Ugh!  Thanks for the replies, all appreciated!

The fusible link is on the large yellow wire (yellow on my '76) coming from the solenoid. There is a small molded "tag" on the wire that indicates that there is a fusible link there. Good luck.

Multi meter    not even that, just a light with pig tails will tell where the power ends. Start at the battery and go ground Power? Positive side of  solenoid   Power? Check your ground strap. If all power is lost the problem is right there. A bad regulator, generator, solenoid, will not cause total electric failure

It may be the two wires that are to blame. If you still have the wires in an L shaped rubber boot that slips on to the solenoid that might be your problem.Remove the boot and replace with ring terminals and add a nut and tighten them down.I have found that this alone fixes most NO STARTS WHEN TURNING THE KEY.This was a major problem of ALL FORDS OF THE 70's etc...
