ANYONE BOUGHT A MANUAL STEERING RACK FOR A PINTO 2.3 MANUAL FROM ADVANCE AUTOS OR AUTOZONE? My car has a power assisted one in place but has no power unit attached! They are available new or re-manufactured.
I believe the manual one is geared slower to make the steering lighter. I assume the splined pinion shaft is the same diameter on both units. Advance Autos didn't know. Does anyone on here know?

Dunno about the gearing but for sure the power unit has variable force in it, the power assists more as the rack loads harder, a torsional spool valve works to variably open the fluid port there. More load=bigger fluid port and more assist.

According to the AutoZone site, the manual rack Duralast #6816 is 4 turns lock to lock while the power rack Duralast #6417 is 3 turns (quicker). From a previous thread linked below, it was suggested that the input shaft is a different diameter between the power and manual rack. From previous searches on RockAuto, various input shaft lengths were also used depending on rack manufacturer Ford or TRW (Ford apparently installed either). Note I could not find Pinto racks on RockAuto presently, another source gone (sigh). Unless somebody else chimes in with more details, I suggest you take detail measurements of what you have in to the store and match it up.

Bought one from Flaming River for 1972 manual steering.
Not even close.

You guys are correct. Managed to find out online NAPA that the manual input shaft is 9/16" but the power assisted is 3/4"
Will have to have a rag joint made up? Anyone know?

Try a Flaming River u-joint kit instead of a rag joint......If your changing the rack with a non stock size....They should stock what you need...

73 Pinto rack will NOT fit in any Pinto except a 73 Pinto. I'ts one of a kind. Go to http://www.jegs.com/jegs/jegsmanualrack.html to see the lengths of the racks, or so says jegs.

I will like to know the final outcome and what you did exactly,had a pinto with non power steering before and I did not mind it at all honestly. Who needs all the leaks :)
And yes I heard that joke 2 things that made men and women equal power steering and handguns :)
But I still wont say they are.

Tonij! On a power steering rack, you can hook the inlet to the outlet on the rack with a short piece of hose, add a little atf first, and your home free with a quicker rack that will steer just fine. Little harder to park but no leaks.

Will this work if its leaking out of the boots?

I don't know about a power rack, but a manual rack has about 8 oz of oil inside the rack and will leak out if the boot is bad. I would think the power rack is the same because the power steering pump fluid is not used to lube the rack. Rack will go to hell if all the fluid leaks out. If you could find the hole in the boot, I guess you could rotate the boot to place the hole on top for a temp fix. Trouble is that you would not know how much oil is still inside the rack. Look in the various Pinto manuals to see which side the oil goes in. I THINK its the pass side of the rack as oil only goes in one side of the rack. Look in the book.

71-72 manual only racks are the same. 73 is a 1 year only. No power on these years.
74-up manual racks will interchange into any power steering 74-up car but you need the coupler for the manual rack if you stick with a rag joint.
74-up manual rack has a smaller diameter coupler & fewer splines than power racks.
If oil is leaking from the boots it need a seal kit.

Where to get rebuild kits ?
Have never seen them listed (72s).

You will need a different adapter to connect the new rack to the ragjoint/steering shaft. They take two different ones. Also may have to extend the steering arm out (it just slides in and out, but its a very tight fit so its hard to adjust)
I learned all this the hard way. I converted two manual steering pintos over to power steering... Added the pumps and lines and everything.
