Title: Any Tips on Replacing a Washer Fluid Pump?
Post by: 1972 Wagon on January 23, 2017, 01:23:54 PM
I have to replace the original washer fluid pump in my 1972 wagon. The pump is located in the bottom of the washer fluid bottle. Thanks to a 2011 archived topic between blupinto and Dave1987, I was able to find an OEM pump at AutoZone (O'Reilly's was more expensive!). Does anyone have any tips on how to install the new one?

I think it is as easy as bending the tabs back on the retaining clip thing that looks like a huge lock washer.  Removing it.  Removing the bad pump.  Install the new pump.  Reinstall the retaining clip and bend the tangs back.  Hope this helps some.

Thanks for the help, Tigger! The new pump went in much easier than I thought that it would. For the first time in years, I can now squirt cleaner on the windshield.

What was the part number for Autozone?

My receipt says #368829, TAAP 7-664. The washer pump was $12.99. My AutoZone had to order it and it was there at 10:00 AM the next day. There were only a couple of AutoZones within 20 miles that had the part in stock. The washer pump was identical to the original which was never replaced before. I know this because the car has been in my family since 1972!

Lol, thanks for the information! I just ordered it and should be here tomorrow. I pulled out the jug and it's nothing but slush where the pump is. Hopefully that's the reason why my windshield washer isn't working.

Glad that I could help! The directions say to lubricate the rubber pump seal with dry lubricant (powdered graphite). I assume this is to make the pump slide in easier. I didn't have any so I just moistened it with water. The pump also comes with a new retaining ring.

That's good to know, thanks for the info. I'll probably just do the same and use water.

Wow! I can see why the pump didn't work. My original pump just had a small discolored spot on the side. Glad that you got the new pump installed.

I'm definitely glad I changed it out, probably was never changed. Thanks for your information, it really helped a lot.
