Anti rattle clips on 1973 pinto with front disk brakes
« on: March 14, 2018, 11:18:43 AM »
Hi..

I just did a 4 wheel brake job on my wagon and was not aware of the anti rattle clips on the front disk pads. And did not notice where they were placed during disassembly.

I found them in the ground after i had assembled the front pads.

The car stops ok but there is a click from the fro t when I apply the brakes.

There are wear patterns on the old pads on the outside pad opposite the piston that matches the clips.

Does anyone know where and how the clips fit or have a photo?

Btw I found 2 clips.. are there more?
Thanks

LTFM
The early disc brake cars had 2 clips on each caliper. 74 and later had only the one clip on  the (inboard?) pads.  The images I have are small but if you have any further questions, I'll try a scan and attach it to the reply

Thanks..

Wellas I mentioned, i only found 2 clips, one on each side

Heres a photo of the clips I found..

The piston side of the old pad has a wear mark that seems to match the wear mark on the clips so I assume the clip was a spacer of sorts to take up the front to back slack of the pad in the caliper?

The brakes were ok before, stopped ok and no noise.

Are the anti rattle clips necessary

Most cars used for racing do not have the Anti rattle clips. .. But if you delete them the brakes operate fine, The noise is annoying , and eventually the pads metal backing will wear into the Caliper holder , leaving a worn spot and more slack in the pedal feel. My 01 Dodge Dakota has these issues and the Pad Manufacturers make wear compensating shims in different thicknesses to restore the groove in the spindle where the pads make contact. (The Spindle doesn't have a Separate Caliper holder like the Pinto, so the whole spindle would have to be welded up and reground flat to restore if these shims didn't work.) Those clips do have purpose.. ;)
I'd put at least one clip in place on the trailing edge of the caliper holder for each side of the car. Those clips  you pictured are primarily for a warning sound to let you know the pads are getting near the replacement zone, in addition to the anti rattle feature.

Ok..

Thanks.. i think the pads I got may have been relined and a bit worn so there is some slack in the caliper..

The "noise" actually a clicking sound when brakes are applied doesnt bother me but wblhen I have time i will probably install them.

Thanks a lot guys..
