8" rear end question.

I just took the pinto for a 800 mile trip around the northwest, throwing pretty boxes at distant relatives, and getting the hell out of there before the egg nog runs dry, and everyone realizes we don't hang out for a reason.

 Anyhoo, I started to hear a little clicking coming from the rear end, the cars not mine. I have some experience with the 9" fords, but this will be my first 8". Is it basically the same design, just a smaller? Or completely different? Any advice before I tear into it? Are new parts still available? And while on this subject, are there any disc brake conversions for the 8" ford? I'm pretty sure it's from a 78 m2.

There's many many places that carry replacement parts an performance parts for the 8 inch rearend.but that's the only knowledge I have for them

If the rear end has a posi and the wrong grease, it will make all kinds of odd sounds. Look under 8" ford rear ends on e-bay. Lots of parts out there.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

So far the only disc brake option I've found is 5 lug. Anyone know of one that lets me keep the 4 lug setup?

There is or was one out there, I thought i had it bookmarked but I can't find it.
It was in the $400-500 range.

Are you sure the clicking is in the center? Could be a brake issue. As Dick says, if grease with no graphite in it used on a p-trac type rear it will snap and make noises but generally when turning corners and not straight ahead.

Not certain yet. It only does it on coast when slowing, so it seems like sloppy rear end at the moment. Doing the brake swap either way though. Them old drums get pretty warm on track days.

I'm going with 5 lugs all the way around. Its so much better. A little costly, but it opens the door for a lot more wheel and brake options...plen ty of parts for an 8" BTW. Not as many as there are for a 9", but still plenty.

Yeah, I was trying to get the car back to basically stock appearance. But the 5 lug seems to have the potential for larger brake discs, via larger wheel options. I like that, maybe more than having the stock 4 lug look.

Some one recently had the same issue .It ended up being  the u-joints. I hope it is something that simple.
