Newer 2.3L engine ID?
« on: July 02, 2014, 08:22:10 PM »
Is there anyway to find out what year at least a newer 2.3 engine is? All I know about the one that came in my car is that it has an electronic distributor, but I can't even say if that was original to the engine or not.
I am not really sure if it matters, I am just worried about getting the right parts for it, like spark plugs etc.
Thanks,
Russ

Don't worry about the ignition it's an improvement over the points deal, I put a Duraspark in mine with an HEI module works great..

Yeah, I am not worried about that. That was one of the planned improvements I was going to make. Nice that it is already there.

I wouldn't even worry about the year as long as you know it's a 2.3 for sure, from the pics it don't really look that new..

Well, compared to 1974, even a 1985 is lots newer. :-)

2.0L oil filter is in the front by the dist. 2.3L is in the rear next to the firewall. After 1980 the 2.3L head will be shaped like a letter D on its side.
Its better to be a has-been, than a never was.

Thanks, I'll see what I can see tomorrow.
It's definitely a 2.3. Now I have to wonder what else has been changed. I guess not much else could be but the rear end, which I haven't looked at yet at all. Bending over is hard work anymore.

Is carb a feedback one or a normal one? Feedback will have wiring going to the control vacuum solenoid, easy to confuse that with electric vent solenoid. Ford went to EFI across all models in '86. Feedback began around '81-82. California got it first, then 49 state. Feedback also has a control computer and O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold.

No carb. I hoped it was in the back with some other stuff, but nope.
Thanks,
