77 Bobcat 2.3L air cleaner
« on: April 22, 2014, 04:03:45 PM »
Quick question folks. My 77 Bobcat with the 2.3L has an air cleaner on it that just doesn't seem right. It has more openings and nozzles to attach hoses to than a deep sea diver or an astronaut. Also, the bottom of the air cleaner has been cut out at some point and was patched with duct tape. This leads me to believe it may not be the original air cleaner. Would one from a Pinto with the same engine work as well? I'm having a hard enough time finding one, but wondered if there were any other options, say a Ranger 2.3L air cleaner?

can you post pics of yours..
can't help with the patch job on the bottom, but we may be able to figure out your vacuum lines.
There are a lot of guys running aftermarket air cleaners that seem to be happy with them.
That's what I'm probably going to do.
Where are you located? If you are close and you can use one from a 78 bobcat, I'll make you a great deal on mine

I will post photos when the car comes back from the shop. It went in today for some other work that I couldn't do. I'm in Ohio, but travel frequently. Where are you>?

If you are hell bent on a stock look & keeping all the vacuum lines then any 2.3 Pinto from about 76 to 80 should have the correct housing give or take a vacuum line.

I'm having this same dog gone problem! I've got a '79 Bobcat and can't find an air filter anywhere! I've gone to junk yards, on-line...nothing.

I've had it for a few months now. I've turned it into my daily driver and have started to put more and more money into it. I stopped working on my '53 Plymouth to fix up the Bobcat. The more I drive it the more I love it. I get stopped all the time and people ask me about it.

I just need to finish up a few more mechanical things, like a proper filter, along with some electrical work then she's off to paint. I've thought about changing out the whole carb but that seems like overkill. I've also thought about putting a 302 down in it.

Any info on a fix or find for an air filter would be much appreciated here also.

RED LINE sell a remote air filter set up for your carb. There on e-bay sometimes.

I'm probably going to make some modifications to my stock air cleaner pretty soon.

Mine had so many holes punched in the OD that I had to go to hardware store and pick out some cheap hole plugs made of aluminum that had bradded OD, you pushed them in and folded brads down and looked nice and clean like factory plug for holes not used. It passed emissions visual inspection several times.

Poomwah,

I'm in Dayton so we aren't far apart at all. I'd be willing to make a trip up if we can come to an arrangement of some sort.

Thanks!
