Title: 76 2.8l swap
Post by: Randy Holman on May 09, 2015, 10:31:38 PM
Thinking about swapping my 76 wagon 2.8l with the c3 auto. Wondering what would be a cost effective, reliable, fairly easy, maybe even more power swap for the engine and transmission. What would you all recommend. Open for just about anything. This is my daily driver so the swap would have to be done over a weekend, crazy I know.

A weekend , well that depends on what you have on the car and how much power you want , best if you got a engine ready to go to drop in, a weekend is possible , other things that take time to hook up if you have them, like power steering , A/C compressor and mounts, if your looking for more power you can do a easy up grade, find a Murkur Scorpio with the 2.9.and use your oil pan and engine mounts on it, yes it will bolt to your org transmission, as is it 40 hp more than the 2.8, you have add more if you can get the overseas computer up to 160 like it is, the intake will clear the hood , the Ranger/Bronco II will not, also you do not have to set the valve lash , it's hyd , these engine with care ,oil changes , and coolent maintenance will run over 300K , and one that surpassed that in a bronco II, and if you can grab the trans also , a great mod for mpg and quiet on the hwy , later Blaine

So a power increase is not necessarily a reason for doing the swap? What is your reason for wanting to do a driveline change?

Computer? I don't think an EFI conversion and and engine swap are going to happen in a single weekend. The 2.9 with a carburetor is probably a good option here though.

I'm doing the swap due to a shot tranny and a hard knock coming from the low end of the motor.

Art, they have this company called FedEx that can actually take it from Idaho where I am and send it to you in Arizona believe it or not. The transmission would be free ;) WOW, such companies that deliver! LOL

I just shipped an 81 pound head from Idaho to Washington, probably about the same distance, it was $86.00. With the transmission for free, how could you beat that? The transmission probably weighs less...

The transmission worked when I pulled it out a few years ago, just wanted overdrive, I serviced it a year before being pulled , and put a shift kit in it, and it comes with a redneck warranty ,  if you break it in half you get to keep both peaces,  can drop off to dock, zip here 39571' later Blaine

Priced out shipping for my other C3, replacing with a C4 for the 79 EFI swap. The shipping came out to like 150 and change :(

Found out that the trans would not fit into 74 pinto wagons pinto , he has a 2.3   , not a 2.8 ,  lucky he had the engine posted on his screen name or he would have been very unhappy when he got it,   :o

Well I hope you get it! Let me know. I can still ship this one to you! I have a transmission and all the stuff from a 79 Pinto 2.3 also. So the 2.0 and the 2.3 trans. I'm going overdrive :)

Thanks Dianne appreciate it, I'm not in a hurry for one so if this one don't work out they'll be others, one in the car still works ok just want to freshen one up and have it ready to go when I pull the motor and fix all the leaks, save on the down time..
