Title: 74 wagon front seat belts ?
Post by: russosborne on July 11, 2014, 02:59:25 AM
All that came with my car is the (I am assuming) lap belts that are bolted on a weird setup along the door sill. No shoulder harness and nothing on the trans tunnel.

So what I am looking for is just what all am I missing? Should there be two receivers for each seat on the trans tunnel? And it looks like the shoulder harness is not tied into the lap belt, correct? As in this is not a 3 point harness?

And is a wagon different than the 74's, or would I be able to use a set from a sedan/hatchback?

Or am I totally wrong?  ;D

If I am correct in my assumptions, it seems like an ideal candidate for updating to a 3 point harness.

Thanks,
Russ

Hey Russ,

My 74 Runabout has shoulder mounts at the roof line above the seat, and threaded holes for receiver seat belts on the trans tunnel.

Thanks.
I think I will just go with a new 3 point belt, will be simpler and probably safer than trying to piece together stuff that is 40 years old.

Honestly, that's not always true. You might want to do some research on that before you move forward. Most insurance companies won't cover you if you don't have the stock belts in the car.

Here is a thread from when I considered it!

And sorry to stir up trouble there. The new belts may well be safer but getting past inspection or insurance may well be a different issue altogether.

Make them look stock and say not a word, or say you bought the car like that if issues come up.

I sold replacement belts at the parts store when I was there, but I wouldn't give you five cents as to whether they would hold up in a court case. Just like so many other things they sell. Once you get to DIYing things you pretty much take all liability upon your own head, insurance companies will go over the wrecked car with a fine tooth comb looking for any irregularities they can reject payment over.
