see if your idle stop solenoid is hooked up and working .. it is there to idle the engine up with the car running then when you shut the switch off the solenoid kicks out and drops the throttle  to shut position .. it may have went bad in the past and a previous owner just set the carb idle higher .. with the idle solenoid you dont adjust the carb idle set screw .,, if you dont have an idle solenoid you can add one ,, i had to put one on my Chevy V6 pinto  for the same reason ..

it should look like this one ,, it says it fits pintos and mustangs . i dont have an image of it sitting on the engine but it sits on the back side of the carb linkage .. some other member should be able to post a picture of theirs ,,

My 67 Mustang did that years ago and it was my starter solenoid. Hope you figure it out.

IT COULD BE THE IGNITION SWITCH IS BAD OR NEEDS ADJUSTING.I HAD TO PUT ONE ON MINE A COUPLE MONTHS AGO AND HAD TO POSITION IT JUST RIGHT WITH THE POSITION OF THE LOCK CYL. AND ROD.

did i misunderstand the question ? i was under the impression your car was dieseling when you turned off the ignition .. if you turn your key off and the car keeps running then that is a different problem altogether ..

When my Pinto would not shut off, my mechanic thought I meant it was dieseling. I explained that I could turn the ignition to the off position, remove the key, put the gear shift into drive, and take off! It was the starter solenoid.

Crazy, I just put a new one in

my bet then is you have a bad ignition switch .. i have never heard of a solenoid switch causing that but on some models  they do have a ignition feed wire on the solenoid .. you can see a letter i on one small wire hook up and a letter s on the other ,, one ( i )  is for ignition and the other ( s ) is for starter  .. while the car is continuing to run with the switch off unhook the  small  solenoid   wire that  has the ( i ) on it and see if your car engine dies .. if not then remove the two bolts that hold your steering column up and unplug the ignition switch located on the top bottom side of the column and see if your engine dies  ..

Fixed
Eazy day

Made a gasket to go between solenoid and mounting surface, and new ground to chassis.
Problem solved

Thanks everyone
