74 pinto 2.0 swap with a 2.3
« on: July 27, 2014, 07:39:48 PM »
I have a 74 pinto with the 2.0. I have a just acquired a 2.3 is this a simple swap? are motor mounts the same? Any other parts needed for the swap?

You will need the frame mounts from a 2.3 Pinto to install it. The trans will bolt up if your 2.3 block is drilled for early & late bellhousings. You will also need a 2.3 points distributor unless you wire in a Duraspark.

Yeah, as long as the 2.3 comes with it's own mounts. Make sure you have a Pinto oil pan for the 2.3 if it didn't come with the correct one.

you will need the frame and engine brackets and the rubber engine mounts for a 2.3. Your 2.0 mounts are spot welded to the frame while 2.3 mounts are bolted. Don't chisel or hammer or mangle the 2.0 frame mounts if you can avoid it.

I took mine off with a $5 spot weld cutter from Harbor Freight. I needed some 2.3 mounts and another member here was looking for 2.0 mounts, so we traded. :D

Are the 74 2.0 mounts welded to the frame? On mine there are holes where they were bolted on. The 74 had both engines as an option.
I don't know, just saying what is on my wagon.

Maybe they were only welded on for '71-73.

There are so many little differences that I need a scorecard. :o

on the 74s the mounts are bolted and not welded from my experience the 72-73 were welded.. the 74 had the bolt pattern for a 2.0 or a 2.3 as I believe it was an option to come from the factory with either.. you need the frame motor and rubber mounts to do the swap a front sump oil pan and pick up for a 2.3
