74 disk brake parts
« on: July 16, 2014, 09:00:58 PM »
So... I've got this loud clanking in the front end when I go over any slight bump in the road. I did some checking on the front end and it all seemed reasonably tight. Except, I found the calipers pivot on the screw that secures the mounting key. They move up and down quite a bit.
If I put a little pedal pressure on while going down the street, the clanking stops.
Aha says I... to the brakes I go.  :D
First I research what I can buy over the counter. There is a hardware kit available with new keys, spring clips for the inside pads, and it looks like an anti-rattle spring. (see the picture)

Wait, I thought this was going to be one of those light weight spring thingies to stop rattles. But it's a bar. uh oh.

Now, the only pieces to the kit that already existed on my brakes were the keys and bolts.
Aha! again... Gulp   :o  After about an hour and a half of wallowing around under the wagon I think I got the inner pad clip on correctly. But this curved bar has me stumped.

Any help out there as to where this thing goes?

TIA Jerry

How many clips do you get per side? You don't clip the inner, rather the back ends of both inner and outer pads to shove them forward. That stops rattle by shoving all the slack out in direction of wheel rotation, it then stays there. . And the curved bar goes between caliper and bracket to take up slack, no looseness with it in place.

Thanks for the quick response.
The kit has two each of the keys, clips, and bars.  If there is supposed to be a clip on each pad then there should be 4 clips. Correct? I'm not clear on where the bar goes. Is it on the top/front of the caliper? I have found exploded views of most things on the car but not this. Tis frustrating.
I'll have to take a closer look at it tomorrow.

The 4 small anti-rattle clips go on the pads. The 2 long ones go between the caliper mount & the piece that locks it in place. I just replaced a broken one of these last month on my wagon. It sounded like my frontend was about to fall off the car with all the noise the caliper made.

Thanks for the reply. I'm headed over to work on it now so I'll see if I can figure it out.

Success! It's really simple when you know where things go.
Thanks for the help.
One of these days I'll know enough about these cars to help someone.
Now, on to the next tasks. The under dash is a mess and I need to figure out what's what under there.

Oooooooooooooh hh, scary, that.......... ..my '80 was a mess with multiple electrical issues but by looking for the fused mass of plastic and redoing everything that went into it, things became 100% functional again.
