73 Pinto 1600 stick shift transmission questions
« on: October 19, 2011, 06:15:04 PM »
Re:  73 Pinto 1600 stick shift transmission questions

1.  Is the stick shift transmission on the 1971-1973 2000 engine the same as the 1600?  I am thinking the only difference is the number of splines on the input shaft for the clutch disc.
2.  Is the stick shift transmission on the 1974-1979 2300 engine the same as the 1600?
3.  is the stick shift transmission on the 1974-1979 V6 engine the same as the 1600?
4.  Are there any 5 speed tranmissions that is an easy bolt on to the 1600?  Overdrive would be awesome.

Thanks for any information.

they are simular from 71-74. but as you know spline count will be different. also your clutch is smaller. answer for number 2 .they are different.the v6 did not get a four speed manual in the pinto, only the mustand Ii, ford capri and 79 fox body mustang got 4 speed manuals.answer for number 4 is yes. there is a 5 speed that will bolt to a 1600. but you have to go to england to buy the proper bellhousing for it. the trans is the type 9 5speed. so unless you have the money for a trip.your out of luck. also if you wanted to know about an automatic. only trans is the borg-warner type 35. found on imported cortina mk1 and mk2.  hope that helps

Hey some people on EBay sell the bell housing all the time...Plus if you check EBay Canada  or E bay U.K. you might find some too.
And they do ship to the U.S. It might be pricey but if you have tohave it they have got it...The cars are also the Ford Sierra with the 2.0 and of course
the RS500 which had the T-5.....

I have installed a 71 1.6 stick in a 74 2.3 using the 2.3 flywheel and pressure plate.   Fred   :)
