I need to replace my oil pan gasket on my 72 pinto, question is do I need to pull the engine or at least raise it up to clear the crossmember or is there enough clearance to get it out?

at most if i remember correctly you just need to lower the rack and pinion and perhaps raise the engine a bit .. it`s been forever since i had a 4 banger in a pinto .. dont undo the steering at the column knuckle .. just unbolt it from the cross member and let it drop a bit ..

I changed my gasket on my 72 2.0 in 1973. I did nothing but remove the bolts. I know this for sure as I was just 19. I was lucky if I knew which way a wrench turned in those days. 47 years later, I still not sure. Remind me, is it lefty loosey?

HA !! it was about 1975 when i did one .. everything since has had some sort of V8 in it ..

I guess I could try it then if needed lower the rack and pinion, thank you again for the help/advice, so glad I found this club!!

This is where these front sump designs pay off. A lot of times a rear sump pan would hit the lower end of the bell housing. That said it can still be a pain to get old gaskets off cleanly and finagle the new gasket around the oil pick up. What works for me is to tie thread through a few of the bolt holes and gasket holes. That way when things get manipulated to get everything in place the gasket isn't falling off. Then, when a few of the bolts get installed you just cut the tread and pull it out.
I'm assuming the gasket is cork. The later 2.3's used a silicone gasket. Even though mine was 25 years old I reused it and never had a leak. Nearly 15 years ago that gasket was about $25. It is likely more now.

The thread trick works well. Should be a cork gasket, l think l still have about 10 lol. What l used to do is spray the pan and the pan side of the gasket with spray adhesive and let it dry a few minutes (lay it out first so you have it correct). When you set it on the pan it's not going anywhere!

Thanks for the tips, never heard that one but makes sense, the gasket is cork, going to try and get done this weekend depending on weather

So...more than I can do right now, rack and pinion does need to be dropped and starter needs to come out as it is right up against the oil pan. Going to save it for a winter project when I can keep it up on jack stands for awhile. Want to take transmission out and run new lines (leaking) and put new seals in it so at that point would be a good time to do the oil pan also.
