Title: 72 chugging after engine warms up
Post by: Koal7 on June 17, 2012, 10:17:42 PM
I have a 72 2.0 with a 3 speed auto trans.

Engine starts and runs fine for the first mile or two down the road then will begin to chug and surge. if i let off the gas it will slow down and run fine, then getting back up to speed (around 50 or 60 at first usually) it will do the same thing again. It continues to do this at lower and lower speeds if i continue to drive.

Also (this may be unrelated but is worth mentioning if not) If I give too much gas the engine will momentarily stall or chug severely unless I let off it will die. It gets better as the engine warms up but never goes away completely.

Fuel filter maybe?

Fuel filter maybe?

I agree, had something very similar happen to me last year = fuel filter

I would be thinking its a carb or intake issue something fuel air related. A cold engine requires more gas, so if its not getting enough air somewhere it might affect it more when its cold? A bad air filter, maybe an air bleed in the carb? Did you check the choke to be sure its closed and opens properly?

It could be fuel to when I first bought my old 79 wagon it would run for a couple miles then stall if I let it sit I could start it and drive it a little further before it did it again. We changed thefuel filter the carb the fuel pump the ign module, I finally had someone check for gas at the carb by pulling off the hose and sticking it in a jar right after it stopped. Just a tiny trickle. It was the sock in the tank.

Somewhere I read about blowing air back through the gas line to listen for bubbles in the tank. I used an old bicycle pump with t he fitting cut off. After I did that it would run ok for a day or two. So then I had someone pull the hose.

Some gas just leaks through the clooged up filter I guess but only enough to go a few miles.

I will try changing the fuel filter but i really believe the problems to be unrelated. It has had the dieing with too much throttle problem for the whole time I have had the car, and the previous owner had the same.

My theory with the chugging and surging at speed (this may be completely wrong) is a transmission issue. It feels like it's trying to shift again then re-engaging repeatedly. also it only happens when the car is in third gear.  I can rev it all to hell in first and second but once it hits third the power starts cutting off and on.
