Title: 72' Hatchback brake drums
Post by: 442 on February 24, 2020, 02:01:02 AM
Just wondering if the front and back drums are the same on the 72' hatchbacks?  Also, any recommendation s on a  source for good quality drums?

Thanks

This site list 71-73 with the front and rear as one and the same. I have no experience of that being accurate. I will caution that the rear brakes on the 8" rear don't work on the earlier cars with the 6-3/4" rear even though the size of the drum can be listed as similar. Hopefully someone who knows 100% will chime in.

Thanks for the info,  I have the stock rear end in it, whatever that was.  I'll probably measure the original drums and make sure they match the ones being sold.

front drums are different then the rear. front drums, you have to account for the spindle and wheel bearings. the front slip over the spindle with wheel bearings inside.

I was kinda confused about this post, and yes, the front drums house the bearings, they're not slip off like the rear. I have the complete front drum set from a '71, if anyone wants drum brakes! Ha! But the '71 1600 only had drum brakes and disc brakes were still an an option for the Pinto's with a 2.0!

That makes sense, looks like the front brake drums are readily available aftermarket but not so much for the rear drums.

I think from what I'm seeing in the aftermarket it's a misprint. The picture Rockauto shows for the front is a rear drum. The rear was the same for all of the 6.75 rears. Pretty sure front drums were gone by the wayside after the '72 model.

you are right about the pintos with the 1600 having the front drum brakes. but I have a 73 and it had the 1600 in it. it also had the front drums on it. I have since changed all that. now with the 2.0 and disc on the front. from all my years with these cars I have never seen drums on the front of one with the 2.0.

From looking at the sales brochures, front disc brakes were an option in 71-73 (2.0 engine required for some reason).  I did see a 72 sedan with a 2.0 engine and front drum brakes that looked stock, but who knows.  Front disc brakes were standard on 74-80 Pintos.

From the Rock Auto catalog and vague memory, the 71-73 front drum brake shoes were 2" wide.  There were 2 different rear drums for 71-73.  There was rear brake shoe widths of 1.5" and 1.75".  The 1.75" drum has some small cooling ribs cast on the out side and was on the wagon plus unknown.  The 74-80 rear drums are 1.75" but have a larger center hub hole than the 71-73.  I have used a 74-80 rear drum on a 71 but it takes extra effort to center it while torqueing down the wheel lug nuts.

In addition to the parts stores, you can try placing an ad here in the classified section and watching ebay "Ford Pinto NOS" for one to show up.  Recommend checking return policies before ordering.

Thanks for the good information all.  Looks like I will be upgrading the front drums to disc brakes in the near future (thanks 71Pintoracer!).  I will still be replacing the rear drums though, have a "rotational" noise from one of them being out of round I think.  Might be enough meat left to turn them as a last resort, but would rather just replace them.
