Title: 5 lug conversion on rear "ford 8"
Post by: vonkysmeed on January 18, 2013, 09:35:10 PM
Have a mustang ii rear axle and would like to either swap the rear axle housing with one that started as a 5 lug (mustang, maverick...) or swap the rear axles and do a brake conversion.  Just looking for the least expensive way to go.  Any thoughts?

You might come out cheapest by looking for a Ranger 8.8 in a junk yard. It's an 8.8(almost as strong as a 9"), has 5 bolt flanges and some have rear disc brakes. All the ones I found were 56 inches wide, the same as the Pinto, though I'm not sure of the spring perches(they are likely close but they can be moved if necessary). The used rear end will likely cost less than two new 5 bolt axles and you will end up with a much stronger axle, likely with posi already installed(look for four wheel drive trucks, most had rear posi).

Most 4.0 litre Ranger have an 8.8 whether 2 or 4 wd.
The spring pads might be on top of the housing so
a small sum of 15.00 for new ones plus welding if you
want to go there.

I bought a 8.8 from under a 5.0 Mustang plasma'ed
the brackets off, welded on new pads and got new u bolts
and shock mounting plates . With a set of 15x7 10 holes
the wheels fit perfect, with the stock 6.75 I had to use a .250
spacer to get the tires off the leaf springs and it had approx.
3.5 inches outside clearance to the fender lip.

 8.8 Rearend w 3.27 posi (used)                100.00
 4.10 gear     (used)                                 50.00
Leaf spring pads (new) pair                      14.50
 Ubolts (new) 4 @ 8.00                             32.00
Shock mounting plates ( new) pair            32.00
Welding pads and shock adapters to plates 35.00

Total                                                         263.50

You can probably source a set of 5 lug axles from Currie or
Strange for 250-300 if you look around.Slide the old ones
out and the new ones in,done and riding in an hour.

I don't think anyone makes bolt in axles. Summit wasn't able to find them through any manufacturer.

I paid 200 for a '68 Mustang 8" 5 lug but spring pads need moved & it's 1" wider than Pinto rear.

I'm getting a set of 4 lug axles drilled to 5 lug for 180 bucks plus 22 for new studs for my sons car.

200 bucks either way.....

Use the Mustang and buy a set of spring pads and get them welded.
You will be good to go.

I went the expensive route, got Moser to make the axles.  ::)
