I have a kit car ('29 Mercedes SSK) that is built over a '73 Pinto 2.0 with 4-speed. I've got the engine running really good now, but he shifter is really floppy. Shifter works and goes thru al the gears, but it doesn't move within the normal 4-spd pattern. I've been told there is a rebuild kit (or bushing) or something that needs to be replaced, but I don't know what to call it and haven't found any parts guys that have anything for the shifter. I'm not anxious to drop the tranny unless I have to. Any ideas from any seasoned Pinto experts? Thanks, Jim B.

Jim,
There is a small plastic 'spacer' or 'bushing' that sits in the end of the shifter and provides a snug fit to the transmission internal linkage... I'm hoping this is the only issue you are experiencing. Last person I knew that had any of these was Tony Peterson... Try Fred Morgan or another member here...

That piece is called a saddle, it is the wear item between the shifter and the shift fork, not sure who has them for the 4 speed here in the state, but heres a link for the UK, I've order several things from this company, you'll have the parts in 4-5 days here in the states, the T-9 Saddle fits the Pinto 4 speed

Bottom of page 4 is the saddle.
Original Ford part number was
D2FZ-7K453-A.

The one on page 9 is made out of brass. Pintony did have the plastic ones in stock.

Does anyone know if one of those reverse switches will work in a 4 spd in a 1978?

Try autozone...The name for the part is a back up light switch.....

Thanks to all you Pinto guys. . .I have the saddle on the way from England (the brass one I think). I'll close this out after I receive the part and let you-all know how it all worked out. I spent a good deal of time calling and looking for this part, and I didn't even know what to call it. Thanks again, this is a wonderful site and I'll be logging on frequently. Jim B.
