4-speed doesn't lockout at reverse
« on: February 18, 2016, 07:39:54 PM »
I restored my 1971 Runabout and the transmission doesn't stop at first gear to lockout reverse.  It works correctly if you lift up on the shifter and I am guessing there is a spring or a clip missing that should push the transmission rail up.  Has anyone experienced this and have a suggestion?  I have the original Ford shop manual but the transmission diagram doesn't show anything that holds the rail in place.  Does anyone have a good diagram of the 1971 Pinto 4-speed?

hi all

I'm having the same probem with loose shifter and no lock out..

i just got the car and figured that it was just a the way pinto shifters were.

but now I'm gonna investigate the bushings

I think that I will be able to fabricate a spring of some sort to lift the shifer up to get the reverse lockout but was wondering where I could get the nylon bushing.

also, I have been trying to get in touch with pintony but havent found a way.  Is he still around?

Pintony is long gone from this site, sorry.
I don't know if anyone is still in touch with him.

Cookieboy might be your route to getting in touch with Pintony.  However, I can't recall the last time CB posted here lately. Dare I say with great reluctance - try Facebook.

Cookieboy is on face book and has a web site with a old Pintony interview.  See links, hopefully he has Pintony contact information for you.

update...

i fixed my reverse lockout issue

I saw that the rubber gromet was deteriorated and that it would not force the shifter up to disengage the lockout.

i removed the c ring above the grommet

then I made two  spacers by wrapping 1/8" aluminum clothesline wire around the shaft above the gromet.

I made the spacers then pressed them down and installed the c ring above the spacers

this compressed the gromet enough to apply tension and raise the shifter.

and the lockout now works.

I plan to replace the gromet with a spring as soon as i find the appropriate spring.

however I found that the nylon bushing was still there but badly worn and i am looking for a source to replace it..

I also found that apparently the bushing can be installed 180 degrees backwards (front to back) and this seems to interfere with the shifter.
