Title: 302 into a 77... have a trans question
Post by: pgccp on April 15, 2017, 03:06:44 PM
I know a c4 with a case fill tube is the way to go.
My son-in law has a c4 pan fill can I use the pan fill
with a after market flexable dip stick tube? If available
Thanks Bob

I'd assume so.  After all it is just a means to get ATF into the trans.  HOWEVER, with the original tub and stick in place I'd measure the the marking points (low/high) in relation to the pan gasket surface on the trans case.  That way you can adjust the new stick depth accordingly.  I did similar when I put a 700R4 in a Studebaker. Because of firewall clearance issues I had to make a dipstick tube with electrical conduit save for the original ends which were silver soldered on.

Beware of the year C4 you use, a Big head bell just will not fit in the tunnel, I have a 77 I am doing a swap on, I ended up buying a BW-RAD 4 Spd (also Have a T-5) and by using the RAD it was not such a fight, I also have a set of Hooker headers (designed in 1980 for Pinto Swap) did not use them because of lack of space between the frames and engine, so I used the 77 Mustang II manifolds (perfect fit), right now I am in a holding pattern waiting the arrival of a second left Upper Motor Mount, and Trans Mount, another tip. to gain an added 1/2" clearance at the top of the trans tunnel, You can use a body wedge and sledge to drive the firewall in 1/2" without breaking anything (wedge gives it a factory indent look), You will also need the driveshaft yoke from whatever vehicle you use the Tranny from... you must use caution and discretion at each fit, or it can end up costing you financially, so try to stay ahead of your build and plan each step...

found that early 70s case fill (car only )C-4 are just small enough ,302  mustang two C-4  was the smallest ,and also the hardest to find , even the C-6 is out because of its huge , I also tried to install a 700R4 because it was a tad shorter than the A4LD transmission but the right side of it hit the headers and also the body , even after all the time making the adapter to fit the 2.8 and flywheel hook up I did not want to beat up, bend, slice and dice the body to make it fit , if it would have been just and small bend or dent I would have used it , sold to a guy with a ford explorer , Installed The A4LD , qq2ofus plan is very true , plan each step as a life and death operation , later Blaine
