I've had some good results with 2 kinds of "jerry rigs", if it has a ball and socket pivot. Mind you, I've never messed with this one specifically. One way is to wind a heavy spring on to the mirror shaft between the back of the mirror and the top of the ball socket, that's if there is room. The other is to use a dremel to cut 1 or 2 slits in the the ball socket, from the top to just over half way down. Then put a hose clamp around it, you may have to grind a flat for the clamp to rest on too.

I am not sure I follow which style mirror you have?  Cable or non-cable?

It has been a few years but I have had no luck in fixing a loose non-cable pass side sport mirror.  I have one on my 73 and have swapped out the mirror a couple times for better ones thru the years until finding the NOS one I am using now.  What you need to figure out is how to add friction to the adjuster without making it more loose than it already is.  There are two screws and the mirror assembly comes out of the housing.  Then you can see how it works.

If you have a cable operated mirror, if you adjuster is loose, chances are the cable is stretched.  I have had decent luck taking the slack out of the adjuster end.  This is going to be hard to explain without pictures but I will give it a try and it is time consuming as well.  You will have to loosen / uncrimp the cables from the bezel housing( the part that the adjustment knob is in).  This is the time consuming part.  Sometimes they break when you try and spread the part that is crimped apart so be careful and take your time.  Once they break, they are useless as they need to hold the end tight or the adjuster will not work properly.  Also the cables fray easily so do not damage them.  Once apart you can remove each of the cables from the knob.  What I did is put something in the slots of the knob to take up more of the slack (basically pull the cable tighter).  If I remember correctly, I used a small piece of electrical tape.  The idea is to put something in there that will pull the cables a little tighter.  Once you get all back together, you recrimp the ends and you are done.
