Title: 2.8L Engine Timming ?

Ok I pulled the engine from a 1978 Mustang. It was a good runner. Replaced most gaskets but left the heads and bearings alone. My pinto engine had a new carb so I swaped that over to the mustang motor.

Now the motor is in, but very very hard starting. Turns over fine with no spark, but with spark is struggles.... rrRRRrr... rrRRRrr... rrRRRrr... rrRRRrr... fires up! 

I set the timing to the sticker under the pinto hood @ 12 BTDC but the mustang hood sticker says 10 BTDC . All with no vacuum lines attached, then reattached when done.

Just to confirm , where does that dist vacuum line go, ported vacuum on the carb right ?

Any help would be great. Thanks !

I never messed with any V6 myself. Be patient & someone should be able to help

That sounds like too much initial, back it off and see if it cranks easier if it does then it's in the distributor, mechanical advance probably sticking??..

Vacuum line should route as shown by the black with red stripe hose.

Hey guys. I still am having issues with the V6 and hard starting. I put things off for a while but I swaped out the Dist for the old pinto one. Disconected and plugged the vacuume lines, set timming to 12BTDC and she is still very hard starting.
The only thing that seems to make her start easy is if i retard the timiing to 12ATDC.
Any ideas?

Is your distributor installed one or two teeth off?
The vacuum advance line should go to base of carb.
I'm rebuilding my V6 and need vacuum diagrams. When I took the engine out, I found some
vacuum lines unhooked. One line went to C4 with dual modulator. Don't know where others go.
Engine was partly desmogged before I got the car, so, some of the lines are for emissions equip.

To close this off.

The vacuum lines are the same as the pics posted from DBSS1234 above. Huge thank you to DBSS1234 for the pics. I was pretty sure that was the way there were i just had that confirmed.

Getting back to the history of this build. Both engine's started well in their own cars. I put the good mustang motor into my pinto, but used that starter from the pinto, it looked better.

A few days ago I was about to leave work on the coast for my 10 hour drive home. 20 minutes before leaving for the ferry the starter died. just click . No rotation what so ever. I ran around town and could get nothing untill the next day. I went to the small local wrecking yard and he had nothing. I found a starter loose in the back of a van. It looked like a 2.3L starter but the cone was difrent. I changed the cone from my v6 starter over to the one i found. Put the starter into my car and it starts easy now !

Maybe the old starter was slightly weak but was ok for the tired Motor.
