Title: 2.8 v6 miss stumble and runs like crap?!?!?!
Post by: bbobcat75 on February 08, 2014, 05:42:48 PM
I know its in my carb, have had to spray some carb cleaner in fuel filter the last 3 times I wanted to go out to a cruise or car show, took carb apart some what today and looks clean, not sure what is the cause for my miss/stumble. as soon as the carb gets cleared out runs great a ton of power!!  but man I went to take off from house this am and wouldn't go over 40mph and sounded horrible like a total piece of crap.  turned around and replaced fuel filters, have a inline one before the pump, ran better but still off. removed to of carb and looked in and was fairly clean, a little rust color at bottom but fuel was clear not cloudy at all, removed jets and float to clean and wiped all the walls of the bowl and now runs great!! spins tires going into second again!!! but what is the cause of this?? bad gas?  a bad carb? or bad gas tank with rust in it? any input will be helpful -  o carb was rebuilt about 3 years ago - car does sit for about a month at a time, its a cruiser not my daily driver!!  yet my 78 can sit just as long and never have this issue and buy gas at same gas station?!?!?!

thanks

One car having a leaking evap system and other not could easily do that. I have sat cars for a couple years with ethanol fuel in them as long as evap seals, once you leak to aspire air in/out with temperature changes though you can count on water in the fuel.

By evap I mean any vapor control lines and tank seal at gas cap. All lines to carbon canister must not leak. Any leak close to fuel then leaches water into the ethanol in the fuel.

Take a gallon of fuel and put it in open container outside on a humid day, it will turn cloudy and have water droplets in it as soon as 5-10 minutes. I've done it a hundred times. The cloudiness is not dense, you will not see it at all looking into a shallow full fuel bowl. You generally don't see the water as well but you certainly feel the effect. The rust powder is evidence it's happening. That rust incidentally will manage to go by almost any filter on the planet, it is that fine. Most will go through jets harmlessly but it can seize up say power valve temporarily to make trouble as well. Problem comes and goes to drive you crazy.

95% of the carbs clogged and needing cleaning will look just fine looking inside the fuel bowl, it's in the dark passages and small orifices the problems begin. One could have a pile of that rust inside a vertical upleg easily since that would be a trap for it. Or trapped behind the transfers or idle needle tip.

Took and put some carb cleaner in bowl last night and sit over night , buttoned everything back up and man I think I solved my problem , but not a full cure need to find the source of my issue!   Thanks
