2.3 Turbo wont start
« on: May 10, 2013, 06:42:38 PM »
Alright guys here's my issue. I have isolated the issue to no fuel coming through the injectors. The engine turns over just fine and I have strong spark. I have checked and rechecked the intial timing and everything seems to be fine. But I have pulled all the plugs and there is not even the slight smell of fuel. I can pour a little fuel in the cylinders and it will pop off. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and it has a new pump. I checked injector pulse with a simple filament test light and it seems I have no pulse. Can this be cause by a faulty TFI module and still have strong spark? What other issues besides a crap ECU can cause no injector pulse? Any help would be greatly apprecaited as I am desperate to hear this thing run.

Do you have constant power with key on to the injectors?  they are pull to ground, so check your ECU, and engine grounding, the engine has to be very well grounded.

Maybe someone can elaborate since I don't know the details but there were certain turbo cars that had a hot & ground reversed that activated the fuel pump circuit. It was like a 1 year deal because of a supplier to Ford at the time.

You should have a separate relay for the fuel pump. When you turn the key you should hear the pump. Start checking your relays. You just used the stock relays and wiring correct ? Some times the IRCM's fail. Check turboford.org for info about the wiring etc. What year, make and model of wiring harness did you use?

No I sure don't. I'm thinking you may be correct in that it may be a ground issue. I went and double checked and I am also not getting power to other sensors. At first I just assumed that since I was getting spark I had good power to the ECU but I think either its not grounded well or I have mixed up a power lead somewhere. I have rewired this car front to back with an EZ wiring kit...not fun. But at least everything else is working. Tomorrow I plan on checking the ECU power supply and grounds and I will post back.

I found the power issue to the injectors. I did not have the power wires from pins #57 and #37 supplying power the ecu. I only had pin#1 wired as my power.  This is what happens when you take an extended break from a wiring job. I hooked them up and checked with the test light and I nowhave power at both sides of the injectors as well as the sensors. everything seems to be powered now so after I fix a small turbo drain issue I should be able to try and fire it up again. And hopefully this time she will. Thanks fr th suggestions.

It was a sweet day. After fixing the turbo drain issue and a coil wire...she fired up on the first try! I just let it run for a min in N/A form, purrs real nice, the turbo spools and no weird noises. Now that I know she runs good I have to finish a few odds and ends like the intercooler piping, the cooling system, custom hydraulic clutch setup, run a couple new brake lines, and fab the exhaust. Hearing it run was the motivation I needed to tackle all this. Hopefully all that wont take too long and I can have it back on the road (minus paint) in several weeks.
