Title: 2.3 turbo aspirator hose to intercooler?
Post by: Rawdawg510 on April 24, 2018, 11:45:41 PM
Does any one know what the vaccume lines on the 88 TC intercooler go or what the purpose is? Can I get rid of it and plug the outlet on the turbo housig?

That little brass fitting has an orifice and I do not know the control logic of it.  Maybe the orifice bleeds off pressure during load transitions.  Attached links may be of use.

As far as I know that orifice determines the boost cut off point as it relates to the wastegate actuator.  With the '88 there is additionally the boost control valve for the Reg./Premium fuel requirements in the vacuum/pressure circuit.  Also, since the Automatic cars ran less boost that fitting in the intercooler has a different orifice size from the Manual trans cars. So, yes, it would be necessay for the stock system and the boost level is dependent the orifice size. Again, - as far as I know.

On my car the only thing that is on the vacuum tree is the Source (which is at the upper plenum and is shared with the fuel regulator) and the boost gage line. Basically I could eliminate the tree and just run the gage line to the plenum fitting. Now, I have eliminated the EGR, and though intended to someday..., have not hooked the cruise control up - yet - if ever.  Going by what is called the Asperator in the diagram Jerry provided above I believe that is just for the cruise control. And that might just be the vacuum bleed valve on the brake petal that I assume is a fail safe to release the cruise control whenever the brakes are applied.

I wish 65 Shelby Clone was more active because he probably has the answer.  i can only tell you my understanding (flawed - or not) of the stock system. You might be better off asking at Turbo Ford, The Ranger Station or NATO. They are far more active sites with turbo experience. This site sees little (post/reply) traffic and there are but a few turbo swap people here.

I'm still around, life just got/gets in the way.

The T fitting on the TC intercooler has an orifice in it that functions as a controlled leak. Eliminating that and capping the barb on the compressor will limit the system to its baseline 10psi of boost. Replacing it with an adjustable bleeder will allow you to control boost beyond 10psi. Just be sure to start with a closed bleeder valve and work up carefully from there.

Also know that there's not a tremendous amount of power to be gained beyond the stock "high" setting of 15psi on the stock intercooler and IHI turbo.

I am capping it off and installing a manual boost controller... will it affect anything??
