2.3 intake gasket warning and questions
« on: October 11, 2013, 10:29:05 PM »
Just thought I would remind you all who have 2.3 engines, I just pulled my head and intake off to fix valve guide seals and I discovered that the last owner of this engine put a D-port gasket on an oval port head sometime in its past, no wonder it never seemed to run like I thought it should. I ended up buying a D-port head because the price was right and it is rebuilt but it has been milled up near to the intake bolt holes. Any idea of about the compression ratio it will have, its a 85 heart shaped head. I could not find a D-port stock carb intake so I ported out the intake ports to the oval port size. It came out nice. I think this head was intended for a pony stock car.

The guy who just reworked my 2.0 head used to race 2.3's and said they would take 0.1 off the head. Just barely leaving threads for the intake and exhaust bolts. Not sure what kind of compression this resulted in but they start at 8.2:1 so anything helps.

To determine the static compression ratio, the volumes need to be measured. This excerpt from the link below may give hint:
The 2300 head can be milled up to the intake bolt holes (approximately .130”).
Using a flattop piston, generally, .040” off of the head equals about 1 compression point increase for the engine. The heart shaped  combustion chamber cylinder head gives a slightly higher compression ratio.

If it's mine & has been together over 30 years I'd pull it to change gaskets as well as seals & toss a belt on it too

Well, in that case if it was 30 years old and never torn down I think I'd go down to bare block, lol. Just wondered because I've changed valve seals a ton of times without pulling heads.

Thanks for the info! Does anyone know who makes the thickest head gasket?
