Title: 2 1/2" full exhaust system 77 pinto turbo lowered 2"
Post by: halfhorse on February 24, 2017, 11:52:31 AM
Over the axle is a real snake job.Under the axle looks bad. 2 muffler shops said they couldn't bend anything over the axle that tight and curvey. It looks like i'm going to hack up a bunch of bends and piece meal it together. anyone have to do this?

This won't help much, but have you considered oval tubing or even sections of Nascar style rectangular tubing welded up in pieces?  Raise the Floor pan in the Hatch or Trunk area for more room?
My car is lowered  but have a passenger door exit with floor pan tunneled to exit in front of Right rear tire Leaving me room for creative rear axle Locating devices.
Best of luck with your Solution.

My 75 is lowered at least 2". I stopped the exhaust right before the rear axle with a 45 degree tip pointed down and outward. Just make sure your trunk and floor pan are sealed and don't get stuck at red lights too long! LOL

See link below and scroll down to Mike Modified's post showing 3" exhaust over the axle with a 3" lowered car.  This looks like a later model which seem to come stock with more ground clearance than the 71-73 cars.

I had it done, try another shop.  1973 lowered 1.5 inches with 2.5 exhaust.

I run the exhaust on all of the Pintos I have built for both street and race down the drive shaft tunnel under the driveshaft. Plenty of room with a 2 1/2" pipe and a lowered car. I then turn a pipe tip down at a 45 deg angle just before the rear axle. Works great and is cheap too. One 4ft section of pipe added on to a HEDMAN header. There's plenty of room in the tunnel. Couldn't be easyer. Some one with even a VEGA could do it.

You can run up to 3" over the axel with no problems! I have 3.5" over the axel I don't recommend you try and duplicate that is extremely hard to do. If they tell you it can't be done find some one with more experience and skill they will have no trouble running 2.5" over the axel. I will say to anyone put your money where your mouth is that say's you can't run 3.5" over the axel on a Pinto!!!!

BTW I forgot to state that a full size glasspack muffler (4" dia) will fit just fine in the drive shaft tunnel along with that 2 1/2" exhaust pipe.

People say that 2.5-3.0" fits over the axle "fine." It fits, but not "fine" in a hatchback. 3.0" is a PITA in my case and requires tight-radius mandrel bends, not regular ones. Found that out after I already cut up the bends. I ended up putting the muffler under the trans and running two 2.25s out the side for now. It works well and sounds good, but I'm concerned about cooking the trans...the tunnel gets pretty darn hot now.

I've always placed mine in the driveshaft tunnel after the tranie, but you can only exit the muffler with a 90 deg turn. Most of mine just dumped down before the rear end. Easy and quick but not the best idea. Muffler shops charge so much any more you have to be on you toes to stay ahead. Worked for me.

Yeah, that's why I opted to put the muffler more forward. Everything comes out of it at a 45° angle instead of 90. It also facilitated the staggered tips I wanted to do.

I'm going to try going over the axle again, but this time ordered a 3" radius doughnut to get the four tight 90° bends needed.

I used to do 2 1/2" over the axle all the time back in the early to middle 70's.  used a huth bender.  clean & easy using tight radius dies.  didn't have any 3" dies back then so the few that I did were hand built.
plenty of room. I always used 14 ga. tube also. lasts a lot longer.

When a tail pipe from a muffler shop cost more than a header, this is what makes Pinto owners come up with new ways to save $$$$. Works for me.
