2.0 Mounting Issues
« on: November 18, 2012, 09:20:41 PM »
A cracked 2.3 is what the '75 Frog originally came with, but I got a '71-'73 German 2.0 for $175 [and it's tranny, and a drive shaft outta a derby car.] I felt really good about a swap..untill I started looking at the engines side-by-side.. >:(

Imma have to some how have to either move the mounts on the frame backwards around 6 1/2"...or make some new mounts so it'll mate correctly with the German 2.0. Does anyone have any experience with these issues?
*Have not taken the 2.3 out of the Pinto yet*

Also: Do they both use the same type of auto transmission? (The 2.0 &2.3) The bolt pattern looks similar.
Bought my Pinto in '12, last tagged in '97. Had it on the road (thanks to a $20) spring '14. Tima to tear it apart, fix it correctly this time....and play with the drive train. Got a totally free & complete drive train-engine, 5 speed, drive shaft, and computer!

I can't help with the mounting issue for the engine, but I do know from  researching putting a 5spd behind the 2.0 that the belllhousing bolt patterns for a 2.0 and 2.3 are the same, but the dowel pins are in slightly different locations, iirc. There is a guy floating around somewhere that makes stepped dowels that'll make it work, but you'll have to  search here to find it, cause apparently I forgot to bookmark that particular thread.

Good luck! And happy Thanksgiving! :) lol

JMO, Don't waste your time putting the 2.0L in the car, you'll have to change the frame mounts, and exh. plus it's getting real hard to get parts for the 2.0,  Find a 2.3 Lima and put in it...

I have done a 1.6 trans to a 2.3 there is enough mount bolts to have good alignment. My opinion is forget the 2.0 parts are hard to find and very costly. 2.3 they made for so many years that parts are plentiful .   Fred   :)

where are you at? i may take you up on that 2.0
Aerodynamics is for those who can't build engines

If ford pintos are not fast then why chevy's have to use there parts to make them fast?
