Title: 2.0 front seal replacement.

i have a 73 wagon, 60 k miles on factory engine.. engine runs well but the front seal leaks.. I have a front seal but cant figure out how to remove the belt gear from the crankshaft.. the gear is recessed inside the front cover with only about 3/8" clearance between the gear and the housing.. Is there a special puller made for removing the gear?.

I have a couple of spare blocks and can experiment on them. as a last resort, I was thinking to notch the housing so I could use a conventional 2 jaw puller and heating the gear to loosen it.. any suggestions

There is a special tool to remove the belt gear. Its made in 2 pieces to slip over the gear. Then a round tube is slipped over the two parts. Then a bolt is used to push the tool off the crank. Got mine off of e-gay. BTW the front seal almost never leaks. The cam leaks from the pulley bolt, runs down the belt cover, leaks out the bottom, and the leak is blamed on the seal. The fix is covered on the FAQ / tech tips forum.

I you do want to have a try at wrestling of the belt gear, take a look at reply 53 of my 72 DutchWagon rolling resto post (I don't know how to make a link to a certain post reply). I just used a steering wheel puller and two pieces of angle iron cut to fit, and with a tiny lip bend at the bottom, to just catch behind the gear. Soak in WD40 for a day or so. Don't put any stress on the surrounding cover, it's aluminum and will break.

I talked to brian at racer walsh and he suggested that the leak was the camshaft seal which makes sense since there is a LOT of oil around the top and down the front of the engine and inside the bellt cover. I took off the belt and hosed off the belt area at a car wash, gonna drive some and look to see where the oil is comming from. The 2.0 has a solid cam so the leak isnt from the cam pulley bolt like on the 2.3
