Post by: 1931ford on November 04, 2009, 03:59:22 PM
I have put a 2.0 with a c4 automatic in a 31 Ford .I would like to put a 5 speed stick in the 31, will a trans from a 1980's 2.3 Mustang fit? All the Pintos Capris & Mustang IIs are long gone in the local junk yards .  will I need to have the crankshaft machined for a pilot bushing .Thanks for any help

I have not done this swap so my info is suspect.  The car 5 speeds have the shifter located towards the rear of the transmission tailhousing.  From what the magazines show, you might need the shifter farther forward in your 31.  The Ranger 2.3 5 speeds seem to locate the shifter farther forward but I think they are not T5's.  TurboPinto72 has a thread showing how he added a 2.3 T5 to his 2.0 Pinto.

Since you have an auto, you need a stock 2.0 pilot bearing.  The car 2.0 and 2.3 manual transmission pilot shafts are the same diameter (or as close as I can measure).  Note that the car 5.0 T5 has a larger pilot shaft.  This link shows some of the T5 dimensions and available gear ratios.

The 2.3 FOX chassis cars came with several different types of clutch cable pull type T5 bellhousings.  The 87 & 88 turbocoupe came with a hydraulic actuated clutch T5 bellhousing.  The 2.0 and 2.3 bellhousing to engine block locating dowels are different sizes and these step dowels may help.

I am not familiar with what flywheel clutch set up that works best.  Hopefully somebody will add or the search function should find additional.
