how to remove the camshaft?

So I finally got the head off the car with the camshaft still attached.  Man that thing is heavy.  I'm sending it out to have some work done on it, but I don't need it to have the camshaft attached still, and it would also cut down on weight.  I know there are two screws that hold in the retaining plate, but I can't get them off for anything.  I'm going counter clockwise - they actually broke a bit for my sockets that is a screwdriver.  They don't want to seem to budge.  Any suggestions for this?  I also wasn't sure if I need to unbolt the cam gear in the front to remove it.  Thanks all!

Last time I removed the cam retaining plate screws, I used a #3 Phillips socket with my 1/2" drive socket wrench...it's extremely difficult to remove using a screwdriver; you need the torquing ability of a wrench IMO.

Hold on, I may have misread your original post...when you say "bits for your sockets that is a screwdriver" do you mean those tiny little magnetic bits? Or do you mean this? http://www.sears.com/craftsman-no-3-phillips-bit-socket/p-00944372000P

It was like what you have there, just not as long.  It fit over the socket and was used, I'll have to see what I can get for it.  I did get the rockers off, so just that retainer clip and we'll be good to go!

Don't recall seeing a hand impact any shorter or fit over a socket??, but should be able to get one like in the pic for about $20, one whack usually does it and won't mess up the screw, you can use it to put them back on too, they also work for regular sockets if you don't have an air impact, it's a real handy tool to have.

Yep, impact driver. Easiest way to get them out without damage

Wasn't sure exactly what I was looking at, but I looked up a video online and I never even knew such a thing existed.  I'm going to be ordering one in the next day or so.  Again, thank you all for all your help.  I'm learning so much stuff and about things I never even knew existed.

When you go to use it put the bit in the screw firmly & twist the impact driver counter clockwise until it wont turn any farther. This sets the direction of rotation when you hit it. To tighten a screw do the opposite. Keep a firm grip holding a little counter clockwise pressure & hit it with a hammer. If you don't the body just twists & the screw wont budge.

Impact driver was necessary to avoid stripping the super soft screws used on motorcycles in the '60s and '70s. While mine not used often now, when it is it's a godsend.

Don't get too carried away hitting it, on a freaky bad day you could break a cam tower there.
