1980 Engine and light harness connector pinouts
« on: May 31, 2014, 06:56:19 PM »
All of the diagrams I can find don't show a picture of the 2 connectors with a pinout. I need to know what each pin is for so I can trace the harness out and remove everything Pinto engine related and connect the Merkur harness for my turbo swap.

Actually even without the pinout you can trace like 75% or more of the circuits out by simply comparing the traces to each other while following them around the board. Grounds common to all needs will tell on themselves, i.e., you won't find power going to both backlighting and say oil light from same circuit, so they must split. The splits determine power into various things. How I do the simple early instruments like these have. I can pretty much trace out every single one. Then draw out your own pinout.

Just an idea but it works. If you have the skills to understand a pinout you are good enough already to do it.

I'm not worried about the instruments right now. I have just the harness at home and am trying to figure out ignition on, always on power, etc. Hoping the manuals I have coming include pinouts as none of the other diagrams seem to.

There's the power for the stock ignition module, oil and water switch wiring, etc mixed in that I need to eliminate. I should've labeled all the plugs before I ripped the motor out and gave it to my dad

I have the cluster at home and will be tracing out the leads to figure out that wiring. It's just a pain to trace out the original engine harness when all of the wiring is out of the car. I could plug it back in and hook up a battery if I have to.

My bad, of course you mean the main harness plug ins. Yes, they often change wire colors under the wrap.

Dunno how I got instrument circuit out of your first post, dizzy I guess.

Yeah, under the dash. I wish they were kept separate but both connectors share lights and engine related stuff

Well I just got the factory wiring diagrams from factoryautoman uals.com and they seem to have everything I need. I'll try to upload scans once I find a place that can scan the giant sheets.

That would be awesome, I still need wiring diagram and/or pinout to figure out why cluster isn't working.
