Title: 1980 Emissions Equipment
Post by: Alpine615 on March 25, 2013, 01:19:14 PM
Hey all, so I was researching what my state (Pennsylvania) requires in the way of a "visual emissions component check" for a 1980 Pinto. The PA Emissions website lists the following:

- Catalytic converter
- EGR valve
- PCV valve
- Smog or Air Pump
- Gas vapor canister
- Fuel inlet restrictor (???)

To me, this sounds like something that you'd find in the fuel tank filler tube...like something that would prevent gasoline vapors from being released when you open the gas cap. Can anyone confirm or refute this?

Thanks,
-Steve

Just a guess, but when leaded gas was still available and cheaper than unleaded the unleaded pumps were equiped with a smaller diameter discharge tube. Cars designed to run on unleaded gas had a restricter in the filler tube to prevent filling up with leaded gas. Many people removed this restricter (me included) to burn the cheaper leaded fuel. Unfortunately this also plugged up your catalitic convertor and that in turn caused other problems. I my case an over heated engine and a warped head.

Ok, thanks for the response. I was just trying to determine if it was a fuel tank thing, or something with the fuel supply for the engine. I have not touched the filler tube, so I should be good.

But isn't your car undergoing modifications currently?

Yes, and I may be in over my head. It's a long, convoluted story, but since you asked...

- Need to rotate my upper intake for front-mount intercooler and chop height out of it for hood clearance. Debating on buying a custom rotated intake from Pinturbo that he used on his red Pinto. His doesn't have EGR provisions...m y state requires it. [Edit: I suppose EGR provisions can always be added, but I have neither the welding skills or tools that would be needed. I'd have to have someone do it for me. Maybe I'll ask Steve if he can for a small fee.  ::) ]
- Needed to move the alternator for FMIC / rotated intake space, so I am using the Ranger alt bracket on the pass side (where the smog pump WAS).
- Every other emissions control device I'm keeping, but those two I listed are the big headaches at the moment.
