25 spline slip yoke
« on: July 08, 2019, 05:38:29 PM »
I had a driveshaft custom made for the Cosworth Pinto with a new slip yoke installed.  The new slip yoke is 6.5" from the center of the U-joint to the tip of the yoke.  My old one is 5 7/8".  This 5/8" difference in the two has made the new driveshaft too long (it can't go into the back of the transmission without bottoming out.

I can't seem to find the correct slip yoke anywhere:  25 spline/1.375 OD/5 7/8" long (as stated above).  The 6.5, even if it would insert far enough into the transmission so that i could mount it to the rear end will be too long.  I'm afraid it might bottom out on a hard bump and damage the transmission.

Anyone know a source for the correct slip yoke?

Do the internal splines extend all the way thru the yoke interrior?

If so can you just shorten the shaft on the yoke you made so it wont bottom out?

Thanks for the input.  I talked to the driveshaft manufacturer, who said he would machine the new slip yoke down to the length of the original.  He will also counter bore the yoke to match the original.  I have to send the whole driveshaft back to him, so he can rebalance it, too.

Nice guy.  Driveline Specialists in San Antonio, Texas.

What transmission and rear end are you running? I went from a:

6-3/4" Rear / C-4 Automatic Transmission

to a:

8" Rear / T-5 Manual Transmission

And the original driveshaft (and yoke) fit perfectly.

Answering two questions from LongTimeFordMa n and Wittsend:

1 - Location - San Angelo, Tx

2 - Transmission - Quaife 4-speed Rocket Box, which is based on the Pinto (German Hummer) transmission.

  - Rear end - Speedway Engineering mini-quick change.  It uses a Dana Spicer 1310 u-joint, and it extends a little farther into the driveshaft tunnel than a standard Ford 6 3/4 or 8 inch rear.  A custom driveshaft is the only option.  Also, the rpm potential and use require a larger diameter driveshaft tube, so here we are.  Haha.

Thanks for everyone's input.  The driveshaft is heading back to Driveshaft Specialist, Inc in San Antonio today.  Jeff there will cut off the yoke to match mine, and rebalance the whole thing and get it back to me asap.

Hi..are you aware of Taylor Engineering in plano tx.

They are very friendly, helpful and specialize in rocket and sierra boxes of all types.

I am located in wylie and have been wanting to organize some of rhe pinro.owners in texas and maybe do some get togethers or rallys or road trips.

LongTimeFordMa n,

I bought the Rocket Box from Taylor.  I called them to see if they had the proper slip yoke, but they couldn't find one in their inventory.  The guy said he'd check to see if he could find one with the specs I gave him, since they had just moved and were still sorting through their parts.  That was a few days ago, and they've not contacted me.  I decided not to wait, so I'm getting this one machined.

It might be a while before the Pinto is on the road and ready to travel/rally, but it would be great to meet some of the guys. If you're ever out in West Texas, give me a holler.

Awhile back I had a roll pin break in the shifter linkage in my sto speed and the guys at Taylor were really helpful in providing the pin and advice about replacing it. It was a small fix but they were great.

I am also working on replacing my factory engine with a rebuilt one and wanted to make a cap to fit i to the transmission output shaft seal to prevent the trans fluid from running out and all over the floor when i disconected the driveshaft so I called them and they were able to provide me with info about the yoke OD so I could make the cap.

Are you setting the car up for racing or just street driving

As far as get togethers.. if you know any other pnto owners in texas pass the word and maybe we can get a rally set up sometime.

Yes, the folks at Taylor we’re very helpful, but this time we just didn’t have any luck. The Cosworth Pinto will be road driven and probably taken to some show ‘n’ shine events. I’m not likely to race it, as it’s not built to fit into any class. Just something to toy around with.

Ive heard of the cosworth mods but have never seen one in a pinto.

Is it the 2.0 or 1.6 engine

Where did you get the engine

Is it computerized or turbocharged

Any idea about how much power it will make

Do you have any pix of the engine you. Oulx post

I bought the engine directly from Cosworth.  It's the heavy duty iron turbo engine block with the twin cam, 16 valve aluminum head, Weber carbs, dry sump, etc. It came unassembled, but with all deburring, balancing, cylinders finish honed, etc., just requiring assembly and clearance checks.  My Cosworth guy told me they no longer offer the engine in this form, and to do it now would be piece by piece and a lot more expensive.
It is advertised to put out about 200 hp with hydraulic cam followers/mild cams and about 270 hp with mechanical followers.  I settled on the "YBB" engine with hydraulic cams for drivability and road going durability.  200 hp at 7500 rpms is just fine.
These three pics are fairly recent.  The car is a bit farther along than this; I'm still monkeying with the wiring now.
In the "Your Projects" Forum there should still be a long string of pics from a couple of years ago.  Search "Cosworth Pinto" and you should find them.
